What is Persuasive Writing?
Persuasive writing, is a piece of work in which the writer uses words to convince the reader that the writer's opinion is correct with regard to an issue.
The Daily Persuasion
Trust in those who we believe will not steer us wrong
We support or reject arguments according to our feelings
An emotional appeal is used to sway the emotions of an audience to make them support the speaker's argument.
Uses the manipulation of the emotions rather than valid logic to win an argument
Emotional appeal can be accomplished in a
By a metaphor or storytelling, common as a hook
By a general passion in the delivery
By an overall emotion
By the sympathies of the speech or writing as determined by the audience
Can be as strong as intellectual appeals
...because people have a deep concern for their well-being and for the rights of others.

This commercial combines desire with character. It uses someone famous to tell you to do something because they did, and they love it.
The desire factor comes from the idea that if you switch to T-mobile you can do anything you want, because you will no longer be "tied-down" by a contract.
But the fact remains that you can't actually do anything you want, and neither could Tebow. So why does something like this work?
The characteristics your writing needs
To be a Persuasive Writer
- Use a "hook" to grab reader's attention.
- State a clear position.
- Support their viewpoint with facts, examples, and other evidence.
- Address alternative positions and refute counterarguments.
- Conclude with a summary of their argument and appeal to readers.
- Know their audience and the best approach to sway them.
3 Ways to Appeal to Your Audience
1) Reason (Logos)
- the logic used to support a claim
- can also be the facts and statistics
used to help support an argument
2) Emotion (Pathos)
-the emotional or motivational appeals
-vivid language, emotional language,
and numerous sensory details
3) Character (Ethos)
- the source's credibility
- the speaker's/author's authority
"What will you emotionally persuade?"
In order to create a valid argument
you must address the claims of both sides.
If your argument doesn't address the opposing side's points then the only people who will agree with your argument are the ones who agreed in the first place.
Each of you will receive a slip Contained on the slip will be certain persuasive topics. Your job is to:
Make a persuasive poster using one of the three elements of appeal (emotion, reason, character)
Be creative and have fun!

it is intended to be published in the
magazine or newspaper article it is sent to and read by a wide audience
The Daily Persuasion
The main purpose of persuasive texts is to present an argument or an opinion in an attempt to convince the reader to accept the writer's point of view.
Letters to the editor often use reason as the basis for their persuasion. Since the topics usually are political or social and are appealing to a broad audience many use reason and logic in their letters.
Some examples of persuasive topics may be:
Personal letters are generally written for friends or family. The topic of persuasion is usually something that person is doing or not doing that isn't good for their well being. Sometimes personal letters are sent to someone that the writer doesn't know personally but still has a strong connection to or strong feelings for, like a famous person, or a relative they've never met.
Because personal letters are, obviously, of a personal nature they tend to use more emotion and appeal to character. Reason is often used as well to make points but generally the basis of the letter is more emotional or appeals to the kind of person that the receiver of the letter is. The topics of the the letter are generally more personal as well.
Some examples of topics may be:
Stopping the abuse of alcohol/drugs
For or against a relationship
Staying in school/college

How Can I Help My Students?
Some ways you can help improve your students persuasive writing:
• Have students listen to and analyze various persuasive speeches and writings in the media, looking for words, phrases, and techniques that are designed to persuade. This improves critical reading and thinking skills
• Challenge students to differentiate fact and opinion from an article. Start by discussing short examples to see if students understand the difference.
• Challenge students to address what people currently believe about an issue so that they can convince them to change through counterarguments. Have them interview 5–10 people (with varying perspectives) about their current beliefs on an issue and create a graph to see patterns in people’s arguments. Students can mention these different beliefs toward the beginning of their writing piece before they make their own argument.
• Find authentic opportunities for students to write persuasive letters to family or community, speeches, classified advertisements, and other persuasive pieces. After a unit on recycling, for example, students could write a persuasive letter to their families to convince them to recycle more.

Persuasive writing sometimes involves convincing the reader to perform an action, or it may simply consist of an argument or several arguments to align the reader with the writer’s point of view.

Propaganda isn't the same as persuasion!
Like persuasion, propaganda is designed to influence people's beliefs and actions, but propagandists often use underhanded techniques to distort, conceal, and exaggerate the facts.
Counter-propaganda is a form of communication consisting of methods taken to oppose propaganda which seeks to influence action or perspectives among a targeted audience. It is closely connected to propaganda, as the two often employ the same methods to broadcast to a targeted audience.
Another commonly used counter-propaganda simply states that the accusations against them are not true, and just a ploy to trick you -->
According to Aristotle, all a writer needs is to appear both knowledgeable about the subject and good-natured. He warns us that appeal should not come from appearances, but from a person's use of language.
Originally character was determined by a family's reputation in the community. Our current culture denies the use of this, seeing as sons and daughters now tend to move away once adults.
Nowadays, current forms of cultural ethos often fall to puffed-up resumes and shiny new items like cars. This causes character to be judged not in terms of contributor to the community, but in terms of identity-through purchase.
The main idea is to project an impression to the reader that you are someone worth listening to. In other words, making yourself into an authority on the subject, as well as someone who is likable and worthy of respect.
When trying to persuade classmates to read a particular book in a "book-selling" poster project, students might argue that the book should be read because
it's hilarious and you'll laugh!
Combination of drawing and writing is used to state a position on persuasive posters.
Persuade people to see how a charity helps people who have disabilities and health problems
Students often score poorly on persuasive writing assessments because they don’t have a authentic audience or purpose; thus their counterarguments and rebuttals are weak. However, if they see writing as personally meaningful and a useful way to express their needs and desires, they will want to improve their skills.
The article also talks about the study that researched this claim. The study compared persuasive writing to narrative writing in three different age groups, showing how younger children weren't as prepared, but still had the potential if guided correctly.
