FET OPEN 1
What is FET OPEN
looking for?

Funding
Writing the proposal
Collaborative
project

Open call with three cut-off dates:

30/9/2014

31/3/2015

29/9/2015
FET Open 1
supports early-stage joint science and technology research around new ideas for radically new future technologies.

In particular, it funds
interdisciplinary collaborations
that seek genuine cross-fertilisation and deep synergies between the broadest range of advanced sciences (physical sciences, information sciences, life sciences, environmental sciences, social sciences, humanities,…) and cutting-edge engineering disciplines (chemical, physical, biological, computational, geospatial, …)
Part B of the proposal
1 S&T Excellence

2 Impact

3 Implementation

maximum 15 pages!!
4 Members of the consortium

5 Ethics and security
A single A4 cover page including acronym, title and
abstract of the proposal
new knowledge

and

high-risk ideas

TURN INTO
Remember that Switzerland is not an Associated Country (yet) in Horizon 2020
At least
three
legal entities. Each of the three shall be established in a different Member State or associated country. All three legal entities shall be independent of each other.
Countries
Composition
No specific requirements. FP7 consortia were
mostly academics.

If you plan to incorporate a company, it is expected to be a highly innovative company
Recognising and stimulating the driving role of new high-potential actors in research and innovation, such as women, young researchers and high-tech SMEs, is also important for nurturing the scientific and industrial leaders of the future.

DON'T GET FOOLED BY THIS STATEMENT
• LONG-TERM VISION:

new, original or radical long-term vision of technology-enabled possibilities that are far beyond the state of the art and currently not anticipated by technology roadmaps.

• BREAKTHROUGH S&T TARGET:

scientifically ambitious and technologically concrete breakthroughs towards achieving the long-term vision and that are plausibly attainable within the life-time of the project.

• FOUNDATIONAL:

breakthroughs must be foundational in the sense that they can establish a basis for a new line of technology not currently anticipated.

• Initiating a radically new line of technology by establishing Proof-of-Principle of a new technological possibility

OR

• Kick-starting an emerging innovation eco-system of high-potential actors around a solid baseline of feasibility and potential for a new technological option, ready for early take-up.

Technology validated in lab
Technology validated in relevant environment (industrially relevant in the case of key enabling technologies)
Technology demonstrated in relevant environment (industrially relevant in the case of key enabling technologies)
System prototype demonstration in operational environment

The EC considers that proposals requesting a contribution from the EU of
between EUR 2 and 4 million
would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately.

Funding for a duration typically
between 36 and 48 months
100% of eligible direct costs (personnel, equipment, consumables, travel, publications, etc)

25% of the direct cost as contribution to institutional overheads

PROPOSAL CHARACTERISTICS (I)
PROPOSAL EXPECTED IMPACT
• NOVELTY:

based in new ideas and concepts, rather than in the application or incremental refinement of existing ones.

• HIGH-RISK:

based on a whole range of factors that cannot be apprehended from a single disciplinary viewpoint. This inherent high-risk has to be countered by a strongly interdisciplinary research approach

• INTERDISCIPLINARY:

collaborations must be interdisciplinary and they should aim to advance different scientific and technological disciplines together and in synergy towards a breakthrough.

viable basis

for

radically new technologies
PROPOSAL CHARACTERISTICS (II)
Back to FP7

FET OPEN was an ICT focused programme.

Most of the funded projects were pure ICT projects

However, some other approaches with an ultimate ICT objective were funded:

BIO-ICT
:

- Bio-based hardware

- Artificial life

- Bio-informatics

- Self-organising systems

- NEURO-IT

Emerging Device Technologies
:

- Quantum information processing

- Photonics

- Nanostructured materials

- Sensors

- Spintronics

- Molecular computing

-others
FP7 FET OPEN PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS
Statistics over 96 funded projects:

- average duration 36 months

- budget between 1 to 3 M€
Statistics over 86 funded projects:

- average size: 6 partners

- 76% of the project were 100% academics

- Large companies were present in 8% of the projects
Participation of excellent non EU partners, whenever necessary and essential, is welcome
- How open would be FET OPEN 1?
- Does your project fit in?
