Fading
Adding Mixed Numbers

Goal: Students will add mixed numbers.

Audience: Sixth Grade Students

Vocabulary: common, denominator, numerator, mixed number
Shaping
Adding Fractions with Common Denominators
1. Shows student how to add fractions with common denominators using pizza fraction manipulatives.

2. Writes down the problem on the worksheet.

Teacher
1.) Gives the student a pretzel when she completes both tasks.

2) Gives the student the next problem (with common denominators).
Teacher
1) Displays the same problem on with the pizza fraction manipulatives.

2) Writes down the problem on her worksheet.

Teacher/Student
-Each time the student finishes a problem correctly (with the manipulatives and on the paper), the student receives another pretzel. Repeat 10 times.
Chaining
Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators
Teacher/Student
1) Presents the problem 1/2 + 1/4.

2) Shows the student how to find common denominators.

3) Shows how to show the problem with the pizza fraction manipulatives again.

4) Writes the problem on the worksheet.

Teacher
1) Does the same problem by changing the denominators.

2) Represents the problem with the pizza fraction manipulatives.

3) Writes the problem on the worksheet.

Using the four steps, the student adds mixed numbers using the problem shown by the teacher.
1) Add the whole numbers.
2) Change the denominators to like denominators.
3) Show the problem with pizza fraction manipulatives.
4) Record the problem and answer on the worksheet.
Teacher/Student
-Student answers 10 more questions

-Teacher gives the student a pretzel intermittently between the ten correct answers.
Shows the student 2 1/2 + 3 1/4.

2) Demonstrates how to add the whole numbers first.

3) Reintroduces the three aforementioned steps
a) Getting common denominators
b) Showing the fraction with the pizza fraction manipulatives.
3) Writing the problem down on the worksheet

-Does not give the student a pretzel after she answers correctly

-Encourages the student to start the next problem
