11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass
Setting
11 Birthdays is in modern time (although time does stop.....maybe..).
The setting is in a suburb; Willow Falls. Willow Falls is quite a strange Place (if you know what I mean...).
Reviews
"....Mass's expertise with pacing keeps the story moving at a lively clip, and her understanding of this age group is as finely honed as ever."
-Publishers Weekly
For the first time in forever they will have separate parties because Leo said some mean words on their 10th birthday party. Amanda is suck wearing an itchy costume for her party but Leo is celebrating his birthday with a huge party including a hypnotist, a football star, a giant iguana, and a rock band. SO not fair!
Amanda can't wait for her birthday to be over! But she's in for a nasty surprise; the next day is her birthday again!

"From the double-entendre title to the solid character portrayals to the clarity and wit of the writing, this novel offers a fresh twist on the familiar themes of middle-grade family and school dynamics."
—Booklist

-Kirkus Reviews
On their fifth birthday, they planted seeds in homemade pots, together.
On their tenth, they learned there are some words you can never take back.....
Amanda and Leo were born on the same day, in the same hospital. They became best friends and were inseparable. They even had every birthday party together.
And now it's Amanda and Leo's 11th birthday.....

Mood
11 Birthdays
is light and warm. The story is touching and sometimes funny.
Friendship
Amanda and Leo try to sort out their friendship. Amanda learns how important friends are and what she has been missing out on in the last year. Being mad at Leo only made her unhappy.
So my alarm clock goes off and I'm like why's it going off on a Saturday.
I probably set it out of habit. so, then I just fall back asleep.
I'm so glad it's not my birthday, anymore.
Then my mom and my sister are acting weird, telling me to get up, and saying it's my birthday.
It can't be my birthday. It was yesterday, right?
What?
The weirdest day ever!
Moving On
Amanda leans to put the past behind her and move on. She has to forgive Leo if she wants to get her friend back.
(According to Amanda)
"Why is it ALWAYS my birthday, and never the day AFTER my birthday?!"
-Amanda
