Computers and Productivity 1.1 Embedded Processors and Automation BY HENRY HORD: Mass production became popular because it enables goods to be produced on a large scale at a low price. Automation occurs when machines are used to carry out a process or an activity with minimumn human effort or supervision. A processor is a part of the computer that follows instructions and carries out actions. It is like the "Brain" of a computer. 1.2 Publishing and Print Industries Publishing is the activity of putting information in the public arena (e.g. newspapers, magazines, books) Mass production requires a large workforce. Disadvantage Repetitive boring work. Printing is the part of publishing. It is an industrial process for the production of text and images with ink on paper using a printing press. 1.3 Postal Mail Sorting Computers are also used to improve productivity in public services. Postal mail sorting is a good example. Benefits of using computers in postal mail sorting. Less manpower is used because of the use of computerises machines. This shortens the time taken to process mail and so the envelopes reach their destinations earlier. Sortings envelopes manually requires a lot of manpower and is time consuming. Also, more mistakes may occur. 1.4 Computers at the Airport Computers can be used for designing airports. Using computers, different designs can be simulated to test their effectiveness. Simulations may be used to test the amount of air traffic that the airport can handle based on airspace capacities, comparisons of alternative sites, airfield layouts, and passenger-and-baggage flow patterns. Simulations also can check how airports react to stress, like in cases where the runways are full and there are still airplanes trying to lane. Travel/flight Informations There is no need to use computers to update travel/flights information boards in small airports because there are less than 20 flights per day. But in large airports may handle hundreds of flights per hours. Doing this manually would involve many people running around to update the travel/flight informations. This is labour intensive and vulnerable to human errors. Customer Database Computers are also widely used to automate the collection of customer information. Example, when booking online, the customer's information is collected and stored on a compuer. Benefits of using Robots Advantages Robots work at fast speeds, products are made in a shorter time.
Robots are accurate and comsistent, consistemcy and quality of products can be ensured, The costd of producing goods are reduced in the long run. Works do not have to be exposed to conditions that are dangerous or harmful to their health. Disadvantage If the robot break down, it will take a longer time to finish the work because you still need to repair the robot. There are two types of pages in desktop publishing, electronic pages and virtual paper pages

Games have evolved from simple arcade games to complex simulatons. An Arcade game, The Sims 2, Nancy Drew, Microsoft Flight Simulator.
An MP3 player, A digital video camera, An MP4 moblie phone. This can let us have entertainment at homes. 1.6 The Home of the future Many household appliances are controlled by embedded microprocessors. These are special-purpose computers because the programs in them are written to do specific kinds of work. Like a refrigerator, a digital video recorder, these household appliances are controlled by embedded processors. The largest software company, Microsoft, aims to make the computer an integrated parts of homes. It does so with the OS, Windows ZP Media Centre. This OS enables you to enjoy these:
Home Entertainment: Movies, music, games.
Personal Productivity: Homework, project work.
Creativity: Editing your digital photos, slideshows. 1.7 Impact of computers on Society Repetitive Work:
Computers can do repetitive work, Example computer can calculate millions of additions in one second. In harsh enviroments:
Computers can work in harsh enviroments such as 1000m below the sea level or on surface of Mars. With No Rest:
Human beings need 1/3 of a day to rest while computers do not. Just provide electrical power and computers will work continuously. Hard labour:
Hard labour involves carrying or moving heavy objects. In the past, clearing mountain was done by human beings. This took a long time, now machines are used to do these types of work. While these machines are controlled by human beings, computer are now being replace the human operator. Limitations of computers:
Humans can react to different situations differently while computers cannot. Reading Handwritings:
Designing computers that can read handwritings is a big challenges. This is because there are too many differences in the handwriting of different people to list down rules on recognising handwriting. Things that Human Beings are Good at Doing Creative Work:
People are capable of creative work which requires doing things that are different and new. Pattern Recognition:
Teachers can differentiate our handwriting is because each human beings have different ways of expressing their's handwriting. 1.8 Artifical Intelligence:
Actifical Intelligence is also known as AI. AI is used to decribe attempts at making machines as intelligent as or more intelligent than people. AI is a relatively new branch of science. It aims to create machines that can find solutions to complex problems. The problem-solving method is usually very sophisticated. Because AI is such a complicated field, it is multi-disciplinary. This means that it taps information from other fields such as Maths, Biology and Philosophy. Why Create AI?
Current research on AI focuses on mimicking the way that the human brain works. Humans are capable of problem-solving based on abstract thought, reasoning and pattern recognition. Many scientists predict that computers will be capable of these actions in the future. Application of AI:
AI is an attractive science because it has a wide range of applications. AI can be found in aircrafts, robot, factory, hospital.
