Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
By: Anne Brashares
Carmen's dad Al and her mother got divorced awhile ago. She goes to visit him in South Carolina and learns that he has a whole new family and has transformed himself into a person she doesn't know.
Friends always have your back.
Carmen and Tibby learn that they can trust each other with their emotions. Carmen and Tibby both get their hearts broken over their friends and family and comfort each other along the way. While Bridget is sick at camp Lena decides to come help her. Throughout the book the girls send each other the magic pants and send each other letters.
Setting #1: Greece
In Greece Lena goes to visit her grandparents in a small town. She meets Kosnos here and paints a lot of her art. It's important because she meets Kosnos and gets their families into a big fight on accident.
Setting #2: Mexico
Bridget plays soccer at a camp in Mexico. She meets Eric (her crush) and two other friends. It's important because it is where Bridget's friends help to encourage her and strengthen her self-confidence.
Setting #3: South Carolina
Carmen stays here with her dad over the summer and meets his new family. It's important because she learns how to face her dad and tell him how she really feels about his decision.
What are the pants?
Carmen went to a thrift store and bought a pair of blue jeans. Pretty soon all the girls eventually try the pants on and they fit them all. The characters are all completely different shapes and sizes so they call it magic! They send the good luck pants around the world to each of their summer travel destinations for good luck and to experience some of each other's summer.
"Seriously. Look at yourself," Tibby ordered. "Those are magic pants." (Brashares, 18)
This quote shows how the girls all discovered that the pants were magic because they fit all the characters.
“Tibby . . . felt equal parts awe for Bailey and disappointment in herself. All she’d ever noticed about Angela were her fingernails.” (Brashares, 272)
This quote is important because it shows Tibby's change of heart when she realized that Baily cared about everything about everyone. Bailey changed Tibby's perspective of life.
“Still the pants promised us there was time. Nothing would be lost. There was all year if we needed it. We had all the way until next summer, when we would take out the Traveling Pants and, together or apart; begin again.” (Brashares,294)
This quote is important because it shows that the four girls can still be with each other even if they aren't physically with each other. They have a special connection and bond, and the pants unite them.
Tibby is a rebellious teenager who is interested in video tech. She works at Wal-Man in their hometown. She has a baby sister named Katherine and a little brother named Nicky. Over the summer Tibby decides to make a video on how lame other people's lives are. Tibby meets a girl named Bailey who helps her on her video project.
