-"When I'm Gone" was written by A.P. Carter and Luisa Gerstein.
-It was performed by the Carter family in 1931.
-In 1937, Mainer’s Mountaineers did "Miss me when I'm gone" and Charlie Monroe did "You're gonna miss me."
-In 2009 was the first time the cup game was combined with the song "When I'm gone". This was done by Lulu and the Lampshades.
The Cup Song
The cup song is a now popular song, product of the combination of the song "when I'm gone" and the old children game, the cup game.
The Cup Game
The cup game is a children's clapping game that involves tapping and hitting a plastic or styrofoam cup using a defined rhythm. It's origin is not truly known, but it has been played for many years.
Rich Mullins (christian singer) used the cup game for the first time to accompany his song "Screen Door" 1987.
Clap Clap
Tap, Tap, Tap
Clap, Grab, Move
(slight silent pause)
Clap, Grab, Hit, Hit, Switch, Slap, Down!
As we can see it is a simple rythm of 4/4 which is easy to follow and learn.
This song is a success because of:
- it is new and original to use a cup instead of instruments, therefore very popular.
-easy to play at home.
-based on a children's game, therefore entertaining.
-soft colour and tone of the singer's voice.
-repetitive rythm that can never end.
-simple rythm and catchy.
How's the song structured?
Acapella version:
-Introduction (only cup)
-Verse 1
-Instrumental (only cup)
-Verse 2
Single version:
-Introduction (2 times with cup, then other instruments are aded)
-Verse 1
-Chorus (2 times)
-Instrumental (with cup)
