Modern Cosmology and the role of Scientist in its Development. Scientists Edwin Hubble, Stephen Hawking, and Fred Hoyle all played a major role in the development of modern cosmology. But first :
What led to Modern Cosmology? What was the role of Hubble in Modern Cosmology? Edwin Hubble Stephen Hawking What was the role of Hoyle in Modern Cosmology? Fred Hoyle Most of the ancient Greeks and European medieval scientists had believed the earth was at the center of the universe - with the sun, moon, planets, and stars orbiting around us.
However, Modern cosmology first began in 1916 when Einstein published his theory on general relativity. Edwin Hubble was a famous American astronomer. He proved that the universe is expanding by making observations of the redshift in light wavelengths from the galaxies. He found out that they are moving away from our galaxy at a rate constant to the distance between them, and that the further away they are the faster they travel.
His observations on the cosmic redshift proved that the universe is indeed expanding and this supports the big bang theory.
After Hubble proved the expanding-universe theory, it has been widely accepted by scientists worldwide. 20 November 1889 – 28 September 1953 Stephen Hawking is famous for his work on black holes. He discovered that black holes emit x-rays and gamma rays that can be detected with scientific instruments.
Using the quantum theory and Einsteins theory of general relativity he was able to show that black holes can emit radiation. His success with proving this, caused him to continue to work on combining the theory of general relativity with the quantum theory. 8 January 1942 - Fred Hoyle was a British astronomer and mathematician. Hoyle, showed how stars die with supernova explosions, then create heavier elements that are shot out into the universe. The planets in our solar system, many rich in elements heavier than hydrogen, are aggregated remnants of stars that exploded billions of years ago. This is called nucleosynthesis. (The process by which heavier chemical elements are synthesized from hydrogen nuclei in the interiors of stars). Now scientist know how different elements in the universe that are heavier than hydrogen were created. 24 June 1915 – 20 August 2001
