Do not use quotation marks with indirect quotations
Example: According the Brown, students should register for the class online. Exact words of speaker or writer


Example: "A penny saved is a penny earned," Franklin said. Direct Quotations:
Dialogue Always place in a separate paragraph with marks around each phrase


Example:
"Will you go?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Thursday."
Direct Quotations Other Quotation Rules... Use quotation marks around titles of stories, poems, songs, etc. (use italics with longer works)

Example:
She listened to "I Want You Back" by Jackson 5 on repeat. Quiz The girls went to see "The Beach Boys" in concert. "The girl was unconscious when I found her", the medical examiner said. Use comma inside marks if quote is 1 sentence (with attribution after)

Examples:

Avoid partial quotes unless highly unusual
Place colons and semicolons outside of marks
Place question marks or exclamation points outside of marks unless part of quote

Example:
Have you heard the song "Mirrors"?
Never use quotation marks...
for emphasis
in place of inches or seconds (12" = incorrect)
around the name of musical groups, dance companies or theater troupes

She said she had “bad day.” WRONG.
