Different people respond differently to feedback, either negative or positive.

Feedback can have a powerful effect on certain people and wash over others unnoticed.

People who are naturally self-critical benefit from positive feedback but rarely need negative feedback.

Positive feedback can create a cycle of enthusiasm, increased enjoyment of a task, enhanced productivity and creativity and can spread positive vibes and motivation to peers.
Negative feedback can, depending on its appropriateness and delivery, similarly generate more negative feedback and create a cycle of reduced motivation
My experience of parenting, in common with many people’s I’m sure, varies from minute to minute between highly rewarding and soul-destroying.
Pre-teen and toddler mood swings result in such varied feedback on my input as “You’re ruining my life” (bought the wrong trainers) and “I love you for making this dinner: it’s delicious” often from the same child in the same hour.
Whatever the context; for me positive feedback charges my batteries while negative feedback seems to drain them almost immediately!
Given the right feedback I could fly to the moon like the Duracell Bunny!
The take home message, which is as applicable in teaching as in all aspects of life, is: be aware of the “light bulb” effect, be generous and spontaneous with positive feedback and sparing with negative feedback, delivering it where possible in a positive way.
My experience of working in Zurich this month had exactly this effect. My colleagues’ spontaneous and generous appreciation of my work spurred me on to be more effective, efficient and enthusiastic, which in turn had a positive effect on those around me.
The feeling was of banks of light bulbs going on in sequence!
