The City of Stalingrad
Stalingrad is now called Volgograd
Located in the south-eastern European part of Russia
The city is 90 km, and is the longest city in Russia
Most important industrial, economic and cultural / historical center of Russia
Battle of Stalingrad
The battle of Stalingrad began in July 1942
Successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad
Russians consider it to be the greatest battle of their Great Patriotic War
Battle of Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest battles in history
German Army lost more than 750,000 men killed, missing or wounded
91,000 German troops were captured at the end of the Battle of Stalingrad.
Troops from Romania, Italy, Hungary and Croatia fought in the Battle of Stalingrad, on the side of Germany.
Outcome of Stalingrad
Death toll is generally accepted to be somewhere between one and two million
91,000 German troops were captured at the end of the Battle of Stalingrad
Civilian casualties are less well recorded, and estimates vary between 4,000 and 40,000.

The Battle of Stalingrad is remembered as the horrible urban battle which ended in a German catastrophe because of Hitler's stubborn pride
In 1945, Stalingrad was given the title Hero City. This marked the heroic actions of the Soviet soldiers who gave their lives to defend the city
