some families have free supply of fuel and, consequently they don’t save money with it, although they consume less fuel than before The quality of the wood or the kind of fuel used by a household in the ICS influences the energy efficiency
The ICS model achieves its best performance with wood of good quality 50 out of 60 families cook faster than before
7 out of 60 families do not cook faster than before
3 out 60 families did not answer 48 out of 60 families reported the less amount of smoke inside the house as the main advantage of an ICS
45 out of 60 families reported that the ICS causes less blacking
39 out of 60 families find the ICS more beautiful than their last stoves
some families also reported the fact that they keep their hands and clothes cleaner while cooking, they do not need to stay on the line to share the gas and that it is possible to do parallel activities while they cook In theory - ICS may contribute to the health of their customers
In practice - It is risky to say that ICS contributed to do so. Reason? There are other factors that are more decisive to alter someone’s health. Like
outside air pollution;
malnutrition; The technical problems mentioned in the field research ranged from flame and hot flue gases coming out through the feed hole to the leaking water around the chimney pipe when it rains. Leaking water problem is due the lack of cement around the junction between the ceiling and the chimney pipe. What to do? A technical advice could solve it easily. Maintenance of ICS: clean the chimney, remove the ashes and put mud. There is a correlation between the regular maintenance of ICS and the technical problem “Flame/Hot Flue gases coming out through the feed hole” The most of the technical problems could be avoided if the consumers often repair and clean their ICSs. 56 out of 60 families are satisfied with Grameen Shakti after sales service
only 3 families are dissatisfied with Grameen Shakti after sales service Three Critical Questions How people evaluate ICS? Special cases House with 3 ICSs in Doulotpur owned by 3 different families. these ICSs were not often used due the lack of ventilation inside the small room where they were built. BUT Instead of solving this problem of ventilation, these families chose to use their old traditional stoves outside the houses, which is still more comfortable for them. Morsheda Akther extracts the soot of her chimney and sells it as pigment to painting shops.
her creativity leads to an extra source of income. Colaborators Grameen Shakti

Grameen Shakti staff in Comilla Recommendations Only 4 out of 60 families earn less than 5.000 Tk per month. Poor or very poor people might have no access to ICS facilities. 17 out of 60 families do not save fuel with ICS. The bad quality of wood or unappropriate kinds of fuels cut off the ICS efficiency. A good service impresses the customers and the neighborhood. The word-of-mouth marketing is still the most powerful tool in the case of ICS. Considering the consumers' preferences, ICS shares the top position with gas stoves. A special program for the poorest could be conceived. Fuel savings would pay back the ICS along the months. Fuel advising could contribute to cut off the consumption and improve the efficiency and raise level of satisfaction. The right product for the right family
(ICS model vs. number of people in the family) Mehrum Nessa is not satisfied with the ICS for large family she bought. She complains about more fuel consumption and the time she needs to heat the ICS. A normal double mouth model could be suitable for her needs. Some owners of ICS double mouth model stress the impossibility to cook with only one mouth of their stoves. Development of a mechanism to block one mouth while the other is being used. 18 out of 41 families cook between 10% - 30% faster
19 out of 41 families cook between 31% - 51% faster
4 out of 41 families cook more than 51% faster Final Considerations ICS is preferable if gas supply is irregular or has low pressure and/or if there is the necessity of sharing gas with other people in the community. Proceed with the field researches.
Make use of your internees! They will enjoy! Stress the financial benefits a regular maintenance of ICS could bring! Alisson Zumpano (email@example.com)
