To show the cruelty?

N/A - it is a picture but we can see the fear in the slaves faces
Gives us an idea of conditions and treatment - the chains, the hold,
is an 18th century illustration. We don't know who made it or anything about them but we can see that it shows harsh treatment of anxious looking slaves. We cant be sure why it was made but it might have been to show people how cruel the trade was.
