Transcript of Pompeii: By Bastille

Bastille is an unconventional band that writes lyrics that provide a different perspective, and this song is called "Pompeii;" a song that is influenced by the ancient city, and provides both a somber tone and theme that is expressed through literary devices.
Thesis
Pompeii:
By Bastille

The song was based on the occurrence of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius; this gives the idea of a tragic downfall of something important as the singer explains how the "walls kept tumbling down."
Hook
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
Lyrics
In a very literal sense, this song is directly about Pompeii. However, in a closer analysis, the song could be about many different situations, such as a falling out with someone or a tragic downfall, bringing about the somber tone and theme.
Conclusion
There are many different metaphors in this song. The singer is going about normally with his own "devices" until a tragic, fast downfall of something is expressed as "walls" are "tumbling down" around him. This intensifies the somber tone and theme as "great clouds" come bringing a certain "darkness."
Metaphor

Chorus
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Metaphor
More metaphors appear in this song. He gets a sudden realization of him "[being] here before" as the singer's world is breaking down, and he wonders how he will remain an "optimist" because he feels hopeless. This furthers the tone and theme.
Lyrics
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
Imagery
There is some imagery in this song. The singer speaks about "great clouds" that create a feeling of sadness as the clouds are probably ready to rain down. This furthers theme and tone.
