What is a genre of literature?
A
genre
of literature is just another way of saying
types
or
categories
of pieces of writing, Just like there are many different types of sports, there are many genres
of literature.
There are TWO MAIN genres or categories in literature that you probably already know!
Fiction
A story that is not real but imaginary and is invented by its author
Nonfiction
is a type of writing that is based on
real
people and events or
facts
that can be proven; some nonfiction can tell a story (a true one, of course) and some will just give us
information
.
Nonfiction
1. Fantasy
a story including elements that are impossible such as talking animals or magical powers…make believe.

2. Realistic Fiction
a story using made-up characters who face a real challenge. This story seems like it could happen in real life.

5. Science Fiction
a type of fantasy that uses science and technology (robots, time machines, etc.) or things that have not happened, but might one day. The setting is usually the future.


4. Historical Fiction
a story that takes place during a real time period in the past, but the main characters are made-up.

3. Mystery
A story about a puzzling event that makes the reader nervous and full of suspense.

6. Traditional Literature
stories that are passed down from one group to another in history like, folktales, legends, fables, fairy tales, myths.
