Daily Life Fashion Housing Legacy Food The ancient Greece people ate three meals each day, breakfast, lunch and supper. For breakfast they often ate bread dipped in wine. For lunch they also ate bread dipped in wine but with olives, figs, cheese or dried fish as a side. And for supper the Greeks ate vegetables, fruit, fish and possibly honey cakes.
The ancient Greeks rarely ever ate meat. The only time when they did eat it was when meats were sacrificed to honour the gods. They used bread for serviettes to wipe their hands and face. Once they were finished with the serviettes they fed it to the dogs. The Greeks used cutlery to eat their food and served it with their hands. They served their meals on plates and bowls made of wood clay or metal.
The Greeks grew olives, lemons, eggplant, zucchini, beans, peas, and a wide variety of herbs such as mint, basil, garlic, oregano and thyme. The format of a simple ancient Greek house around the 6th and 5th century BC consisted of 2 to 3 rooms built around an open courtyard. These rooms were often built from stone, wood, or clay bricks. For the people who were wealthier and higher up in the hierarchy their houses were larger, featuring a few more rooms. These extra featured rooms often consisted of an extremely basic kitchen, a bathroom used for bathing, an andron, the men’s dining room and occasionally a Gynaikon, the women’s sitting area where they often worked on their weaving and spinning and entertained their female friends. Although the Greek women were allowed to leave their homes for small amounts of time much of their life and the rest of their family’s lives were centred in the courtyard. The ancient Greek people enjoyed listening to stories and fables. One favourite family activity was to gather in the courtyard and listen to these stories told by the mother or father. Most meals were consumed in the courtyard as most of their cooking equipment was small and light and was portable.
