BY JULIAN FLANIGAN THE HOLI FESTIVAL WHAT THE HOLI FESTIVAL CELEBRATES? In North India, this festival is associated with the story of Prahlad and Holika. The word Holi is derived from the name Holika. Holika was the sister of Hirankashyap, the demon king of the Asuras. HOW IS THE HOLI FESTIVAL CELEBRATED? People spend the day smearing colored powder all over eachother's faces, throwing colored water at each other, having parties, and dancing under water sprinklers. Bhang (a paste made from cannabis plants) is also traditionally consumed during the celebrations. THE HOLI IS AN ANNUAL FESTIVAL CELEBRATED ON THE DAY AFTER THE FULL MOON IN THE HINDU MONTH PHALGUNA (MARCH). WHY IS THE HOLI FESTIVAL CELEBRATED? THE FESTIVAL OF HOLI CAN BE REGARDED AS A CELEBRATION OF COLORS AND BROTHERHOOD-AN OPPORTUNITY TO FORGET ALL THE DIFFERENCES. THE HOLI FESTIVAL IS CELEBRATED? WHEN WHO STARTED THE HOLI FESTIVAL?
