C11H17N3O8 comes from a marine bacteria found mainly in pufferfish--but other similar species as well 1 milligram can sell for $199 classified as a poison Effects upon use natural Produces axonal blocks of the preganglionic cholinergic fibers and the somatic motor nerves Blocks voltage-gated Na+ channels in excitable tissues Medical use currently no use, but tests on rats are being conducted for future use on humans Prevention of ischemic damage in brain that follows stroke, OD suppressing pain in cancer patients relieving the symptoms of withdrawal in opiate addicts anesthesia paralysis Symptoms death from respiratory paralysis within 4-6 hours Treatment no known antidote treated by removing remaining toxins in stomache life support with artificial respator Psychological Effects the poison doesnt cross blood-brain barrier so the brain isnt directly affected possible mental impairment completely lucid throughout experience Physical Effects inhibited contraction respiratory failure Criminal penalties not illegal only scientists that are registered with the HHS can use tetrodotoxin if the amount in possesion is under 100 mg scientists are exempt from registration unregistered non-scientists can recieve up to 10 years in jail for possesion just 1/2 mg is lethal Most common uses in the japenese delicacy of "fugu" (pufferfish) but contains very small amounts with special preparation Fugu that is prepared carelessly is deadly voodo: zombie making in Haiti and Western Africa it is the main ingredient
