What is an Independent Suspension
Independent Suspension is a term for any vehicle suspension system allowing each wheel on the same axle to move independently of each other.
Different forms of Independent Suspensions
Most modern vehicles have independent front suspension (IFS). Many vehicles also have an independent rear suspension (IRS).
Most vehicles use Macpherson struts, Chapman, or Wishbones.
Early forms of Independent Suspension used Swing Axles. Which made a huge step into the Automotive Industry.
Purpose of a Suspension
The suspension is the only the component that separates the driver and passenger from the ground.
The suspension in vehicles help absorb the harshness of the road.
Example of MacPherson Strut
Independent Suspension is set for regular driving and handling.
Both tires won't be affected by any imperfections in the road. Only one when it hits a bump.
What is a Live Axle
A Live Axle is a basic design from a beam axle where both wheels are connected by one solid beam or shaft.
Live Axle Cont.
A Beam Axles Camber angle stays the same no matter where you travel.
Camber angle is made by the wheels of a vehicle. The wheels make the angle of the vertical axis for steering and the vertical axis of the vehicle from front or rear. Example: Positive Camber and Negative Camber
Beam Axles fore and aft location is by either trailing arms, radius rods or leaf springs. Lateral location is constrained by either Panhard rod Scott Russell Linkage or a Watt's linkage. Shock absorbers, leaf springs, coil springs or air bags control vertical movement.
Twist-beam rear suspension
Based on a large H or C shaped member. Front of the H attaches to the body by rubber bushings, and the rear of the H carries each stub-axle assembly on each side of the car.
Usually called a semi-Independent suspension or torsion-beam axle.

1. Better ride control
2. Each wheel is undisturbed by the other wheels.
3. Better for regular driving
Solid Axle Suspension
1. Cheap and simple
2. Very Space efficient
3. Perfect for trucks, SUVs,and vans.
Cons on both suspension types
1. Very Complex
2. costs more to replace
3. very high manufacturing process.
Solid Axle Suspension
1. Doesn't allow each wheel to move independently on bumps.
2. mass of beam is part of unsprung weight can reduce ride quality.
3. cornering ability is terrible due to no camber angle.
