Soccer the most popular sport in the world At the turn of the century, soccer was played by over 250 million people in over 200 countries, making it the most widely spread and played sport in the world It is enjoyed by many all over the world Soccer is liked by many passionate fans around the world History of Soccer Soccer was believed to have been created over 3,000 years ago The origin of the game was found in Japan and China The first ever football association (soccer) was created in England in 1863 Soccer quickly became popular all throughout Europe It spread to other countries in Asia, Africa, North America, and South America International leagues began and eventually, the FIFA World Cup began in 1930 and has continued even until today Rules and Regulations Soccer is played with eleven players on each team This includes a goalie A goalie is the only player on the field who is allowed to use their hands during the game If any other player touches the ball with their hands intentionally, it will result in a penalty and a free kick for the other team Players in the field of a soccer match must use their feet to move the ball However, they may use their theighs, shoulders, head, and chest to control or make a move with the ball Soccer is regulated by referees In a typical game there are three referees Fun Facts America and Canada are the only countries to call it soccer;whereas, every other country calls it football The average attendance of a European soccer match is anywhere from 60,000 to 80,000 people The average attendance for an American soccer match is from 30,000 to 40,000 people The World Cup is the largest
