By Charlotte Masquelier-Page The Subjunctive! What is the subjunctive? How to form the subjunctive... Regular verb patterns... -IR -ER -RE Irregulars... The subjunctive is a tense that effectively does not really exist in the English language.
However, it is a mood is used to express actions or ideas which are subjective or otherwise uncertain: will/wanting, emotion, doubt, possibility, necessity, judgment. It is nearly always found in dependent clauses introduced by que or qui, and the subjects of the dependent and main clauses are usually different. The subjunctive tense in French is formed in the following way:

To form the STEM, take the "ils" form of the Present Tense and take off the "ent". Next, add the following endings:

je -e

tu -es

il -e

nous -ions

vous -iez

ils -ent -ER jOUER

Je joue
Tu joues
Il joue
Nous jouions
Vous jouiez
Ils jouent FINIR

Je finisse
Tu finisses
Il finisse
Nous finissions
Vous finissiez
Ils finissent Vendre

Je vende
Tu vendes
Il vende
Nous vendions
Vous vendiez
Il vendent Like all other tenses, there are some irregulars.
These include:
Avoir Etre
Faire Aller
Pouvoir Vouloir Savoir

The following verbs follow the pattern given above, but are irregular in that they revert to the IMPERFECT in the NOUS and VOUS forms:
