King Leonidas The Brave
Transcript of King Leonidas The Brave
King Leonidas was a very brave soldier and King. He led an army of only 300 of his soldiers to fight a Persian army of thousands. King Leonidas was a great hero who possessed courage, determination and selflessness. In the battle of Thermopylae King Leonidas knew that his whole army was going to be defeated so he stayed with a select group of soldiers and dismissed the greater part of his army to save them.
King Leonidas The Brave
One of the personal struggles King Leonidas experienced in his life occured when he went through great pain and suffering to defend Sparta. The Spartans courageously lost the battle of Thermopylae but saved a great number of Spartans who were dismissed by King Leonidas.
King Leonidas was born in the year of 540 B.C. and died in the year 480 B.C. His Father was King Anaxandridas II who was King from 560 B.C.- 525 B.C. and his mother who is unknown but was said to be Leonidas' Father's niece . He had a half brother named Cleomenes who was the the king at the time. Once Cleomenes died Leonidas became King and ruled the Greek city Sparta.
One quality King Leonidas possessed
was bravery because he was brave enough to fight his way through battles, for example when he battled the Persians and stayed in the battle until he died courageously. This demonstrates the sacrifice that he made to protect Sparta and his soldiers.
The sign on the shield is
the letter Lambda which
stood for Laconia, the
region which Sparta is in.
This symbol was found
on most of the shields that
were used in battle
This is one of
the swords that
the Spartans used during the battle
of Thermopylae. The
sword is called kopis which means cutting or hacking in Greek because of the devastating wound it gave.
This is the type of Spartan helmet that Leonidas
would have worn during the battle of Thermopylae.
The fur on top of the helmet is there to make the Spartans look taller which makes them more intimidating to their enemies.
