the most commonly used input device for entering text and numbers into a computer.
ergonomic- lets you use more natural and comfortable hand, wrist, and arm positions.
cordless- a battery powered keyboard that transmits data using wireless technology.
specialized- specialized keys that represents items such as those used in fast-food restaurants.
security- provides security features such as biometric finger-print reader, magnetic stripe, and smart card readers
keyboards
the most common pointing device for personal computers.
mechanical- has a ball located on the bottom that rolls around on a flat surface as you move the mouse.
optomechanical- the same as the mechanical, but uses optical sensors to detect the motion of the ball.
optical- uses lasers to detect the mouse's movements.
wireless- a battery- powered device that relies on infrared waves to communicate with the computers.
trackball mouse- a upside-down mechanical mouse, with the ball on the top.

touch pad- a pointing device with a specialized surface that can convert the motion and position of your fingers to a relative position on the screen
pointing stick- a pressure- sensitive device that looks like a pencil eraser
audio input- sound entered into a computer, includes speech, sound effects and, music.

used to display their device typically desktop computers.
cathode ray tube(CRT)- one of the earliest type of computer monitors, are similar to older models of television sand can display monochrome or color output.
flat-panel- come in two varieties(take up less space than CRT monitors and are much lighter.
liquid crystal display(LCD)
produces an image by manipulating light within a layer of liquid crystal cells
gas plasma.
consists of tiny amount of gas that is activated by an electric charge.

printers
produces a paper or a hard copy, of processing results
impact printers- use a mechanism that actually strikes the paper to form letters and images.
non-impact printers- form characters without striking the paper.
laser printer- produces images using the same technology as a copier.
inkjet printer- provides good quality color printing for less expense than a laser printer.
scanners-

devices that can change images into codes for input to the computer.
image scanners- converts images into an electronic form that you can store into a computer.
bar code- reads bar lines that are printed on products
magnetic - read encoded information on credit cards
wireless- uses bluetooth wireless technology to scan bar code data.
