In a moment you will receive a worksheet with a series of poems on them. With your partner you must read each poem and come up with one tone for each. Remember that the tone is the author's attitude. So you'll be reading the poems to determine what the author's attitude is.

Look for clues in language the writer uses to identify how he or she feels about the subject

Read the writer's words. Look at the mood word list the teacher gave you. How did the words make you feel? Choose a mood.
Henry Armstrong lay in his grave, but he did not believe that he was dead. He lay on his back. It was very dark and it was very quiet. He had never seen darkness like this before. He had never known a night as quiet as this before. He reached up and felt splintered wood. His arms began to flail as he realized there was no escape.
Read the text and connect
with the words. How do they make you feel? Choose a mood from the list.
Jamie had piles of clothes on her bed. She tore
through her closet looking for the perfect dress. The
pile was nearly the size of Mount Everest. Finally she found
what she was looking for. It was the one....the one dress that would accomplish tonight's goal. The goal: make him notice her. She smiled; she knew it would work. Giggling, she looked in the mirror. She knew...she just knew that
tonight Marvin would stop dead in his tracks when he saw
her. And that would be the beginning of their fairy tale
romance. She plopped on the bed and smiled.
Read this poem and identify the author's tone.
How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the water of the Nile
On every golden scale!
How cheerfully he seems to grin!
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!
The subject of the poem is a crocodile.
It seems a bit lighthearted, doesn't it? As if the author knows crocodiles can be dangerous, but he isn't taking this one very seriously. So the tone is more playful.
Let's go back to the poems on the TONE TONE TONE worksheet. Let's focus on mood now. How did the poems make you feel? Discuss with your partner. It's personal, so you and your partner will most likely have varying opinions.

WRITING ACTIVITY: We are going to take part in an activity called THE MYSTERY MOOD. Your teacher will give each group a top secret mood. You must write the paragraph with the goal to create that mood in the reader. Don't give the mood away. If you are successful, your readers will hear what you wrote and feel that mood! So in this case, your TONE of what you write will also hopefully be the MOOD.
