Transcript of complete and incomplete metamorphosis

The process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages. Metamorphosis Complete metamorphosis is when an insect goes through four stages of life egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Complete and Incomplete Sawflies go through complete metamorphosis Sawfly complete metamorphosis advantages Advantages and Disadvantages http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef410.asp Bibliography Incomplete metamorphosis is when an insect only goes through three stages of life egg, nymph, and adult. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earwig http://www.uen.org/utahlink/activities/view_activity.cgi?activity_id=2024 Larvae and adults don't share food source so no competition. Live in different habitats during their life stages. Disadvantages Out of the four stages only the adult stage has enhanced mobility. They have a short adult life this limits the time they have to reproduce. http://www.ehow.com/info_8672677_two-disadvantages-complete-metamorphosis.html Incomplete metamorphosis advantages The vulnerable pupal stage is avoided. http://www.amentsoc.org/insects/fact-files/life-cycles.html Disadvantages Share the same food as adults, so there's competition Little parental protection for young. They have enhanced mobility in all stages except for the egg stage. They have a lot of parental protection. Earwigs Scientific name:Euborellia annulipes Earwigs go through incomplete metamorphosis. When there nymphs they eat plants. When there adults they eat plants, decaying matter in soil, and both living and dead insects in this stage they're predators are chickens, birds, spiders, and frogs. Scientific name: Neodiprian lecontei They go through complete metamorphosis. When they are in the larvae stage they eat the underside of leaves, and there predators are birds, white footed mice, and ants. When they are adults they eat pollen and nectar. Eggs hatch in about a week into larvae. Larvae usually feed for about 4 to 5 weeks before pupating.Pupa overwinter and pupation occurs soon after the advent of warm weather into adult sawflies that live for about 2 weeks. Egg Larvae Adult Pupa In about 7 days the eggs hatch and nymphs emerge.Nymphs are similar to adults but smaller. After 4 to 5 instars nymphs molt into adults wich would take them over a 70 day period.Earwigs only live for one year.
