Advantages Software piracy can be seen as a profit-making industry as the content being downloaded is either free or is at a reasonable price. Easy to acquire - Pirated software is easy to access. To access pirated software is practically nothing or close to nothing to obtain. End user policy - which occurs when users duplicate software without suitable licensing. This involves copying and sharing amongst those who pay a particular interest in the software and companies who have not received a legitimate license to authorize there software installation. Pre-installed software - This is a procedure whereby the manufacturer takes a copy of the software and illegally installs it to various computers. Statistics Software and information industry association and the business software alliance have found software piracy on a global scale to be up to 40%, 23% in which the U.S.A is responsible of. In reference to the straits times newspaper in Singapore, which was reported in may 2010, it states "that software piracy cost technology firms around the world more than $50 billion in 2009". Trisha Bezman of south carolina and Craig Depken of texas carried out research and found that countries that engage in illegal activities such as software piracy have lower rates of economic development. Rise of the internet - low enforcements teams couldn't prevent the trade of illegal software's during the 1980's....... Digital piracy - Prior to the development of software piracy becoming widespread on the internet, thieves used dial-up.... Beginning - before 1980 duplicating programs from another computer was easy alongside retrieving pirate copies, as they where without any legal ramifications. Due to affordability we may not be able to purchase the software's, however that is not an excuse to copy it. Although there is a wide range of people copying software this does not determine whether its ethical. Dependent on the pricing of the produce, which at times may not be equivalent to manufacturers price, this may be seen as a rip-off, however many will see this as getting a bargain, not a pirated company. (Hall, N.D) (landers, N.d) The download of pirated software is beneficial for those who do not have sufficient funds to purchase the legal copies. (Stephen Taylor G et al, April) Reference. Stephen Taylor G. Shim J.P (April 1993). A Comparative Examination of Attitudes Toward Software Piracy Among Business Professors and Executives. volume. 46 no. 4 419-433. Rationale Piracy has always been viewed at a negative perspective, whereby it is considered as damaging, harmful and fraudulent to the software industry. It is an easy opportunity for many who are without sufficient funds or access to these software's to retrieve them from another source i:e the shadow market, where they are still able to access near enough the same content. Piracy should be prevented as it deprives legal software producers the rightful amount of profit from producing software that should only be sold and distributed by them.
