September 11, 1777 The Battle Of Brandywine Creek West of Philadelphia
West of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania Location: Pennsylvania British: trying to gain ground off of Philadelphia from America.
Americans: trying to defend Philadelphia from the British. Both sides were trying to accomplish: British: Major General Sr. William Howe
American: General George Washington Commanders After the battle, British gained more ground on their way to capture the American capitol of Philadelphia. Forces British: 6,000 troops, 89 killed, 488 wounded, 6 captured.
Americans: 8,000 troops, 300 killed, 600 wounded, 400 captured. Weather: 58* F, calm winds, thick fog Winners: British
Losers: Americans Interesting Facts General Sir William Howe had the opportunity to shoot General George Washington, but didn't because it was respectful during the war not to shoot another general-clear shot
Battle started around 9:00 a.m. Uniforms British: Red Coats with leather headgear-Guns with beonettes
Americans: Wore whatever was available to them at the time of combat-Muskets
