Lesson Objectives
To understand the terms health, exercise and fitness and understand how the relate to performance.
To understand the 5 components of health related exercise
To understand the 6 components of skill related fitness

Health
A state of complete mental, physical and social well-being.
Exercise
A form of physical activity which maintains or improves health and/or physical fitness
Fitness
The ability to meet the demands of the environment
Performance
How well a task or skill is completed by an individual or team

TASK - Give a sporting example of how not achieving one of these elements can affect an individual or a team performance.

Body Composition is influenced by genetics, although it can be improved by exercise and diet. Some aspects of body composition, such as height, are clearly genetic. Elite athletes work hard to achieve good body composition for their sport. Taking part in physical activity and sport can enhance body shape in a well planned and controlled personal exercise programme.
Muscular endurance enables muscles to be exercised repeatedly without getting unduly tired in activities such as swimming and running. It is necessary for many sports and activities, and many people require muscular endurance in their everyday life.
Muscular strength enables the lifting of heavy weights. It is important if work or a particular sport involves the exertion of a great force. Muscular strength can be developed by lifting heavy weights with repetitions or high intensity strength work.
Flexibility is an aspect of HRF which is often neglected and taken for granted. It is important in both sport and everyday life. It is most often demonstrated by athletes such as gymnasts and those that play racket games such as badminton and tennis.
Cardiovascular fitness describes the efficiency of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to working muscle tissues so that prolonged physical work can be maintained. CV fitness is the most important aspect of HRF.
