do take time to read and write..
If you see an error - correct it!
Howard found some definitions this week that others had entered, that were wrong
[10/13/09 3:33:31 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": he corrected them without notes.
[10/13/09 3:33:52 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Because this is a collaboration we want this to be as correct as possible. Authorship is collective. Add, improve, correct.
Does mult-tasking ever NOT degrade performance?
for example why is it that talking on the cell phone is always more distracting than talking with someone in the car next to you?
Howard's conjecture is when the context is shared, or even immersive that this may be the case.
can you really wean us off our laptops?
[10/13/09 3:38:51 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": The Dynamics of Attention
[10/13/09 3:39:24 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": The classroom is a classic example of continuous partial attention
[10/13/09 3:39:56 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": while some students are genuinely productively engaged with the course via their laptop this isn't ALWAYS the case.
[10/13/09 3:40:11 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": What are WE doing?
[10/13/09 3:40:17 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Facebook
[10/13/09 3:40:19 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Twitter
[10/13/09 3:40:23 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": blogging
[10/13/09 3:40:26 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": reading email
studying for the next class?
[10/13/09 3:40:58 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": is anyone paying attention?
Should Stanford go "Topless"?
The "Heckelbot"
Video on attention 101
he is loosing attention
immediate feedback about how badly you suck while you are on stage
[10/13/09 3:45:07 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Howard
[10/13/09 3:45:18 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": 's own experiments in multi-tasking
[10/13/09 3:45:18 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": 's own experiments in multi-tasking
[10/13/09 3:45:50 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Can he multi-task himself?
[10/13/09 3:46:14 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": can he communicate in more than one mode at the same time??
[10/13/09 3:46:51 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": we all see the truth
[10/13/09 3:48:38 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": check Howard's annotations on your prior reading in the class schedule

Network VS Community
are networks made up of communities?
People you just know
Shared interest
Strong ties VS weak ties
more repeated interactions?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Well defined
There are a lot of very precise, measurable terms that define networks
there are many definitions that are not right
it is difficult to define what it is and the definition seems to stretch and morph as context, means of communication, location, relationships, etc. change
[10/13/09 4:04:41 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": As social change happens the definition of "community" changes with it
We caught some lost attention here...
a community whose community section is anti-social and anonymous and yet they consider themselves a "community"
Social Media Class 13 Oct
What about this "Virtual Community in Real Life"?
[10/13/09 4:07:52 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Meat Space Push Back
[10/13/09 4:08:10 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": is the backlash to disconnect?
[10/13/09 4:08:29 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": what are the consequences to disconnecting?
[10/13/09 4:09:19 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Liberating to not have to worry about the constant connectedness
[10/13/09 4:09:36 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": "I JUST DON'T ANSWER"
Is social media an obligation?
2034 AD
"All these people I don't really know...
knowing all this stuff about me.."
will we call this the "Age of privacy"?
DARDENNE PRAIRIE, Mo. — Megan Meier thought she had made a new friend in cyberspace when a cute teenage boy named Josh contacted her on MySpace and began exchanging messages with her. Megan, a 13-year-old who suffered from depression and attention deficit disorder, corresponded with Josh for more than a month before he abruptly ended their friendship, telling her he had heard she was cruel......
image unchecked...
in a couple of years, we'll boil down our networks to the minimum
peer pressure, commitment, obligation to a larger group
[10/13/09 4:11:16 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": cyber-space connections whither and die
[10/13/09 4:11:26 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": meat-space connections get more attention
[10/13/09 4:12:00 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Would you FRIEND YOUR OWN MOM?
[10/13/09 4:12:54 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Is there a breaking point due to lack of privacy?
[10/13/09 4:13:09 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": will this result in an age of "new privacy"?
[10/13/09 4:13:59 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": It's disorienting for me when the community moves from age homogenous to age diverse
[10/13/09 4:14:19 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": My Grandma can get a Facebook page and message me - this is NOT OK
[10/13/09 4:15:26 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": IT'S JUST A BIG MESS RIGHT NOW
[10/13/09 4:15:42 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": LinkedIn is a social network without the social aspect only professional contacts make it boring
[10/13/09 4:16:05 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": -but that's how I got this position at Prezi!~
[10/13/09 4:16:47 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": which social networks do we USE vs which social networks deliver VALUE for us?
[10/13/09 4:17:33 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": do we USE the same ones that provide VALUE FOR US?
[10/13/09 4:18:33 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch":
The only time I feel anxiety is when I'm off the grid - Howard
information comes to you - you don't need to seek out

Virtual community and real life
Before we begin...
[10/13/09 4:40:13 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": a quick survey
[10/13/09 4:40:19 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": so open up your laptops
[10/13/09 4:40:22 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": and start paying attention
[10/13/09 4:47:42 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Multi-tasking was probably originally coined for computer
[10/13/09 4:47:53 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": 's that parallel process
[10/13/09 4:48:10 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": If you do so many things at once you can't have a deep understanding of these things
[10/13/09 4:48:30 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": with increasing technology comes an expectation of increasing speed
[10/13/09 4:49:44 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": what does it mean that the US has the most cars with automatic transmissions per capita?
[10/13/09 4:49:57 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": why don't European cars have cup holders?
[10/13/09 4:50:27 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": at 200 MPH things happen pretty fast.
[10/13/09 4:50:43 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": why doesn't my $$MILLION$$ dollar car have a radio?
[10/13/09 4:51:28 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": social tools degrade our capacity to learn. reduces our capacity to learn the material
[10/13/09 4:52:37 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": multi-tasking is only one area
[10/13/09 4:52:46 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": What about Real vs. Virtual?
what are the rules in virtual space?
[10/13/09 4:53:32 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": in real "meat" space the rules are clear and the social expectations have been established and accepted
[10/13/09 4:53:45 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": in the virtual world this isn't really the case
[10/13/09 4:54:15 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": can your digital footprints be misused or even used against you?

[10/13/09 4:55:12 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": 24 hour access.
[10/13/09 4:55:16 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": is it too much?
[10/13/09 4:55:31 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": when you disconnect yourself from the network, are you really ALONE?
[10/13/09 4:55:59 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": is this disconnecting from your virtual self and plugging into your real self?
[10/13/09 4:56:14 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": If you lose your cell phone is your entire life down the drain?
[10/13/09 4:56:24 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": (or do you just need to learn to back things up?)
[10/13/09 4:57:52 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Are things really that much more complicated nowadays?
[10/13/09 4:58:04 PM] Oliver Starr "stitch": Howard - the answer's yes.
Cell phone, lap top, netbook - new freedom or VERRRRYYYY LOOOOONNNNGGGG LEASH?

We tweet, therefor we are

general uproar for memorable moments in front of a screen...

is this really waste?
wasn't Gmail a product of this?
