Transcript of Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is an Aztec and Mayan temple that was influenced by Quetzalcoatl. It means "at the mouth of the well of the Itza", and is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. During Autumn and Spring equinoxes, a predictable phenomena occurs. Chichen Itza photo credit Nasa / Goddard Space Flight Center / Reto Stöckli Quetzalcoatl: Who is he? Quetzalcoatl is a Mesoamerican deity whose name comes from the Nahuatl language meaning 'feathered serpent'. Quetzalcoatl is the snake figure that travels down Chichen Itza two times a year. Equinoxes An Equinox is when the tilt of the Earth's axis is neither facing towards nor away from the sun. Rays of the sun shine directly on the equator on around the 20th of March and the 22nd of September. When an Equinox occurs, a snake like figure travels down one side of Chichen Itza, and when at the bottom of the monument, it conjoins with the stone head of Quezalcoatl. This predictable phenomena happens because the sun's light covers the western handrail of the structure's main stairway, causing isosceles triangles to form. What happens to Chichen Itza when an Equinox occurs? Chichen Itza is located in Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. It was built for astronomical purposes. Where is Chichen Itza?
