Odysseus' son Telemachus was searching for his father after he never returned from the Trojan war, Odysseus as of today would have been classified as missing in action. Telemachus searched the Mediterranean world for his father, which he ever found. Once Odysseus finally did return home it was hard for Telemachus and Penelope to entirely believe him, but soon things got back to normal.
Athena, daughter of Zeus begged him to help her rescue Odysseus, and he gladly helped her and he sent the messenger god Hermes to help to Get Calypso to set Odysseus free so that he could return back to his journey so he could get home.
It took Odysseus many years to complete this journey and he wouldn't have been able to do it without the help of his other shipmates.
The water was a bit of an obstacle for Odysseus considering the fact that God of the sea Poseidon wasn't exactly in his favor after what Odysseus and his men did to Poseidon's son Polyphemus.
Odysseus is the prime leader of this journey and he had to make sure that things were going as planned, at times it was hard for him but he managed to reach his goal in making it bsck home, and safe.
During Odysseus' long voyage he had one main goal, that was to make it back home to his loving wife Penelope.
Telemachus is Odysseus' son and he was in search of his father for a while after he never returned from the Trojan war.

Odysseus had to build a raft in order to continue his journey, the sea god, Poseidon would not allow that to happen. Only with the help of Athena and a sea nymph was Odysseus able to make it to the island of Scheria.
There was multiple occasions in which Odysseus was offered help by a few of the Gods and he gladly accepted it, without some of them he might as well had been dead.
During Odysseus' journey they encountered many obstacles and one of them was the sirens. Luckily Odysseus was warned about them and was given certain procedures that he needed to do in order for him and his men to be able to continue their voyage.
During the long journey Odysseus had a fear of Poseidon trying to kill or sabotage him and his men, there was no way of him knowing but he had help from Athena and other gods. without their help Poseidon would have killed him without any problems.
