In LOTTO 6/49 six numbers are drawn from a range of 49 and if the six numbers on a ticket match the numbers drawn, the ticket holder is a jackpot winner.

What is a chance of winning?

There are 49 numbers in a machine and all of them are equally likely to be picked. So for:
draw 1 => 49 numbers
draw 2 => 48 numbers
draw 3 => 47 numbers
draw 4 => 46 numbers
draw 5 => 45 numbers
draw 6 => 44 numbers
49x48x47x46x45x44 = 10,068,347,520

If a ticket has the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, it wins as long as all the numbers 1 through 6 are drawn, no matter what order they come out in. Accordingly, given any set of 6 numbers, there are 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 720 orders in which they could be drawn.

Dividing 10,068,347,520 by 720 gives 13,983,816.

So the chance to win a jackpot is

1 : 13,983,816
