As many as 6.9 million people suffer from diabetes in Pakistan and the figure could go up to 11.5 million by 2025 if steps are not taken now to control the disease, Government College University, Faisalabad (GCUF).


KARACHI, In Pakistan.
9 million people are affected by diabetes which can grow to 11.5 million by 2025 unless measures are taken to control it.
In 2007, 246 million people world-wide suffered from diabetes making the disease one of the most common global diseases and the fourth leading cause of death in the world.
The risk of developing type 2 diabetesis linked with increased obesity, can be managed by making healthy dietary choices and more importantly, by increasing physical activity.


DIABETES
Overall prevalence of abnormal glucose tolerance is 20.5 per cent in women and 15.9 per cent in men..
Death from heart diseases in women with diabetes is 23 per cent more as compared to those without diabetes.
People with diabetes are 2-4 times more likely to suffer stroke.

The overweight and obesity are the fifth leading risk for global deaths.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates suggest that 26 percent of women and 19 percent of men in Pakistan are obese. Women are 2-3 times more likely to be obese.
Childhood obesity is increasing with an estimatedvalue of 10 percent.
Obesity in Pakistan is a health issue that has attracted concern only in the past few years.
According to a list of the world's "fattest countries" published on Forbes, Pakistan is ranked 165 (out of 194 countries) in terms of its overweight population
22.2% of individuals over the age of 15 crossing the threshold of obesity.
One-in-four Pakistani adults are overweight.
OBESITY
Obesity in 25-44 year olds in rural areas is 9% for men and 14% for women, and In urban areas, prevalence is 22% and 37% for men and women, respectively.
For 45-64 year olds, prevalence is 11% for men and 19% for women in rural areas, and 23% and 40% in urban areas for men and women, respectively.
In South Asia, including Pakistan, social and environmental changes are occurring rapidly. The coexistence of underweight in early life with obesity in adults may presage both a higher prevalence and incidence for no communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes.

LAR is a feature of leg band that is provided with selected shoes and works with sensors built in the shoes. Lactic acid causes the hardening of muscles.
