Environmental Awareness

For my capstone project, I decided to spread awareness of environmental issues affecting humanity and the eco friendly activities we can do to make our world more green by doing little things like recycling to implementing green energy in our everyday lives.

Spreading Awareness

Environmental awareness was an integral part to my project's success. To persuade and spread awareness throughout my school community, I created powerpoints with videos that I presented to Mrs. Urkevics third grade class and made the students participate in activities involving the environment. I also decided to have a bottles and cans drive so that I could collect recyclable material to organize a recycled arts and crafts class.

Recycled Arts and Crafts Class

With the help of Ms. Wolfe our school art teacher, I was able to organize this successful event without any obstacles. During this event I read the group of fourth graders the book Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg basing the art project on the quote "A smudge and a smear make magic appear" from this book. This book promoted reducing, reusing and recycling through art from taking something wasteful and turning it into something beautiful.

My Capstone Project
Throughout this capstone experience I faced many obstacles mainly regarding my solar panel installation.
Earlier this year, I contacted an organization called Secondary Solar Panels for guidance.
My plan was to raise money and buy a solar panel but the cost of the panel with the installation was very expensive, so I decided to build one instead,
During the beginning of the school year, I was able to build a working solar panel but it wasn't as effective as I thought it would be.
I overcame this obstacle by raising about 200 more dollars and selling all the solar panel parts I bought to build it to earn money to buy a solar panel that I could install myself.

Environmental awareness is to understand the fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection.
While coming up with a capstone project idea i felt that promoting environmental awareness would be an easy way to participate in creating a brighter future for our world.

Aldo Leopold once said
“Harmony with land is like harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his left.”

Thank You!
BFCCPS has built a strong foundation for my future and has assisted me throughout the capstone process. I would like to thank my whole school community for supporting me throughout this project. I would like to give a special thanks to-
my parents,
my advisers, Mr. Heater and Mr.Duque
My Advisees- Delaina, Sana, Joey, Brenden, Jack, Hunter and Olly
Mrs Urkevic and her third grade classroom,
Claudia, Delaina,Lauren,Kiran,Sana and Grace
…for helping  me throughout this year-long project!

My overall project turned out to be very successful. I spread awareness through media with the third grade, conducted a creative arts and crafts class, installed a green energy powered solar panel and accomplished all my set goals.

Not only did I learn to overcome problems and help my communitand help my community grow but I also built communication skills with peers, teachers and the organizations.
