Handling Equipment in Dry bulk
Transcript of Handling Equipment in Dry bulk
* BULK CARGO HANDLING PLANT *
Plant used in general cargo handling may include:
• loading shovels of varying sizes :
• Bulldozers :
Material-handling equipment is equipment that relate to the movement, storage, control and protection of bulk materials, goods and products throughout the process of loading and discharge
Dry Bulk material such as ore, coal, Iron ore, grains, cement, cereals and derivatives..
* The loading and discharging operations are almost completely mechanized:
Discharged by Grabs or by Suction pipes, and Loading through a shooter or via a conveyor Belt.
As a result of the mechanization of the loading and discharging process and the automation, the bulk cargo handling requires very few people to load or discharge the vessels.
The loading, carriage and finally the discharge of dry bulk cargo is not as simple or straight forward, Many bulk cargoes have hazardous properties, or can change their properties on passage. The ship can be easily damaged by incorrect loading e.g. loading a forward hold to it maximum can cause the ship to bend. This ‘stress’ can have life threatening results at sea in rough weather.
• Excavators :
An excavator is an engineering vehicle consisting of an articulated arm (boom, stick), bucket and cab mounted on a pivot (a rotating platform, like a Lazy Susan) atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. Their design is a natural progression from the steam shovel.
Excavators are used in many roles:
• Material handling in Terminals.
• Brush cutting with hydraulic attachments
• Heavy lift, e.g. lifting and placing of pipes
A bulldozer is a crawler (caterpillar tracked tractor), equipped with a substantial metal plate (known as a blade), used to push large quantities of soil, sand, rubble, etc, during construction work. or bulk materials . The term "bulldozer" is often used to mean any heavy engineering vehicle, but precisely, it is a tractor (usually tracked) fitted with a dozer blade.

• Hoppers :
A usually funnel-shaped container with Wheels in which collect materials, such as grain or coal, to be stored in readiness for dispensation.
with a door in the floor through which materials are unloaded.
A storage container used to dispense granular materials through the use a Chute (gravity) to restrict flow.
• Grab :
A hydraulic or motorized lifting device used to pick up, transport and dump loads of bulk materials Which is enabling it to be stacked.
• Cranes :
A crane is a type of machine, generally equipped with a hoist, wire ropes or chains, and sheaves, that can be used both to lift and lower materials and to move them horizontally. It is mainly used for lifting heavy things and transporting them to other places. It uses one or more simple machines to create mechanical advantage and thus move loads beyond the normal capability of a human.
Cranes are commonly employed in the transport industry for the loading and unloading of freight, in the construction industry for the movement of materials and in the manufacturing industry for the assembling of heavy equipment.

• Suction pipe - unloader :
A pipe or tubing removes and collect heavy material on land, from various places
through process of exerting a force upon a solid, liquid, or gaseous by reason of
reduced air pressure (compressor) over part of its surface consequently under suction.
From one place to another.
It’s also used for handling commodities such as grains.
• Screw- unloader :
Screw are particularly well suited for picks up and handling powdery and dusty materials from the bottom of Holds using compressor and where limitations in height need to be considered. It’s commonly used for handling commodities such as cement, cement clinker, sulfur and minerals, and is applicable to ships up to Panamax size .
• Loading - chutes \ spout :
Chute (gravity), a channel down which falling materials are guided
The loading chute has been custom designed to handle dry
• Shiploader :
Is a huge machine used for loading bulk solid materials like iron ore, coal, fertilizers, grains into ships for transportation by sea. Shiploaders are a very common sight in ports and jetties from where bulk materials are exported. It mainly consist of an extendable arm or boom.
High Angle Sandwich Belt Type Shiploader.
A fully mobile shiploading system for Riga Fertilizer Terminal. The system consists of a mobile wheeled hopper .
• Conveyor belt- loading :
Handling such as those used to transport industrial and agricultural materials, such as grain, coal, ores, fines, and lumps material. Conveyor belt systems generate less dust. The dust may damage ship's machinery as well as the health of personnel.
Bulk cargoes have an inherent tendency to form a cone when they are loaded if conveyor belts or similar systems are not supervised and controlled. For some cargoes, bulldozers may be required to spread the load into the sides of the holds as cargo is nearing completion.
These conveyor structures contain belts for moving bulk sulfur from railcars to storage piles and from the piles to ships.
• Stacker Reclaimer :
A stacker is a large machine used in bulk material handling. Its function is to pile bulk material such as limestone, ores and cereals on to a stockpile. A reclaimer can be used to recover the material.
