TO YOUR LEFT SHOWS THAT LUIGI SNOZZI USES THIS DEVICE IN MORE THAN JUST ONE HOUSE BUT HAS APPLIED IT IN A DIFFERENT WAY
WITHIN THIS BUILDING THE WALL WRAPPING IS SHOWN IN THE SECTION MORE THAN THE ELEVATION, AS YOU CAN SEE ABOVE.
VERTICAL WALL WRAPPING
Devices - Wall Wrapping
THE PLANS ABOVE SHOW THE FREE PLANE BUT THE DIAGRAM TO THE RIGHT SHOWS US HOW THE FREE PLANE DEVICE BRINGS LIGHT INTO THE HOUSE AND CREATES ENCLOSING AND CONTAINMENT.
Devices - Free Plane
ABOVE IS A DIAGRAM OF SPACE CARVED OUT. TO THE RIGHT IS THE IMAGE IF THE HOUSE WAS A SINGLE BLOCK OF CONCRETE, THIS SHOWS THE SPACE THAT HAS BEEN CREATED.
Devices - Space carved out of solid
Devices - Servant Served
LIKE A PHOTOGRAPHER SNOZZI FRAMES THE VIEW OF THE LANDSCAPE. IF THERE WAS A RULE OF THIRDS FOR ARCHITECTURE, THE WAY THE BUILDING ALMOST PRESENTS THE LANDSCAPE, HE DOSES THIS BY THE DEVICE FRAMED VIEW.
Devices - Framed View
Devices - Functions
Devices - Geometry and Symmetry.
“THE BASIC IDEA AND THE PATH, VARIOUSLY ARTICULATED, LEADING HAND IN HAND WITH CHANGES IN DIRECTION TO THE INSIDE OF THE BUILDING, EXTENDING UNTIL LATER IN THE LIVING ROOM DOWNSTAIRS ROOMS. IT ALLOWS YOU TO DISCOVER FROM TIME TO TIME THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF THIS PARTICULAR LANDSCAPE, THE LARGE LIVING ROOM WINDOW, THROUGH THE LARGE OPENING IN THE WALL CURVE FITS GLOBALLY TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAKE, THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER TICINO.”
LANDSCAPE TO LUIGI SNOZZI IS VERY IMPORTANT, THE HOUSE HAS A STRIKING IMPACT ON THE EYE HOWEVER YET IT SITS COMFORTABLY WITHIN ITS SURROUNDINGS, ALMOST LIKE A HAND INTO A GLOVE, IT RESPECTS THE FORM OF THE LANDSCAPE AS THE GLOVE RESPECTS THE FORM OF YOUR HAND.
THE LOWER RIGHT IMAGE SHOWS HOW THIS IS ALSO A COMMON DEVICE IN LUIGI SNOZZIS WORK.
Botta worked with Snozzi during research into modernist architecture. The close proximity in which they worked has led to them having similar ideas and concepts in the way they design.
Snozzi uses symmetry to make the view over the house follow the same gradient of the hillside its situated on.
By ending the pergola at the same point that the upper balcony starts creates balance in the building.
Snozzi tends to locate the 'servant' spaces of the house in the northern end of the house and the 'served' spaces in the southern end of the house.
There also seems to be 'pods' of what seem to be storage cupboards that sit centrally on the two bottom floors, as well as the central bathroom on the top floor.
Snozzi splits private and living spaces between two floors. Private spaces such as the bedrooms are on the top floor, whilst the living room that leads out to the pergola is situated on the ground floor.
The entrance, being an undefined space is located on the basement and entrance floor below the living space.
