THE GORGON'S HEAD
GROUP 5
"The Gorgon's Head"
Summary
of the
Story
Acrisius
, King of Argos, has an only daughter, Danae whom he shut away from the sight of men in a house of bronze all sunk underground.
He

forgot
to take the Gods into account. One day, Zeus stormed into Danae’s chamber and their son was born.
The king
discovered the baby so he had a great chest built, placed Danae and the boy and set them adrift upon the sea.
A fisherman
, Dictys saw the chest and decided to took them both to his wife, for he was childless.
Perseus
grew up and Danae was still beautiful that King Polydectes made her his wife.
The king
sent young Perseus to Medusa saying it was an adventure in an attempt to get rid of him.
Perseus
did not know where to look for the gorgons nor did he know which of them is Medusa. The one day, he saw a young man of great beauty, wearing winged scandals and a winged cap and in his hand, a wand with two golden serpents twined. It was Hermes.
Hermes
told him to go to the Gray women and snatch the eye from the three.
Hermes
gave Perseus a curved sword and Athene gave him a bright shield
Danae’s son
was able to snatch the eye from the gray women so they gave him what he needed.
Fully equipped
, Perseus sped through the air to the fearful island of the Gorgons.
He
their scale-covered bodies, their great wings folded, the snakes that were their hair lay hideously coiled and intertwined. The Gorgons were asleep. Athene told him that Medusa is the one nearest to the shore.
With one stroke
, Perseus cut off Medusa’s head
He
saw a lovely maiden fastened by chains to a cliff by the sea. The beautiful maiden was Andromeda. She was a sacrifice to appease the sea god.
Perseus
made a deal with her parents that if he beat the serpent, he would marry their daughter to which they agreed to.
He
beat the serpent and took Andromeda but Phineas, Andromeda’s uncle did not agree to their marriage because he was promised Andromeda’s hand.
He
struck Perseus with a spear but Perseus was able to leap from the cushions. He took out Medusa’s head and all the attackers turned to stone.
Perseus
sailed home with Andromeda but Polydectes’ hatred had in no way lessened. He was furious that Perseus came empty-handed but Perseus took out Medusa’s head to cruel Polydectes.
They
came to Argos but King Acrisius was away from home. Games were being held in Larissa and Perseus decided to join. And here at the game, the oracle came true when Perseus threw the discus, it killed an old man and it was king Acrisius, who had gone to such cruel lengths to avoid his fate.
