Song Lyrics
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it's time you'll know

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

'Cause, baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah"
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through-ough-ough

'Cause, baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah"
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

Simile
Metaphor
The first line of the song states "Baby, you're a firework'. It is saying that you ARE a firework and it is not humanely possible or advisable to become a firework which shoots up into the sky and explode into lights. Therefore, this line is a metaphor. When watching a display of fireworks, many people's jaws drop in awe. Having the chance to watch fireworks light up the night sky happens very few times throughout the year and being a "firework" shows one's uniqueness. It is telling the audience that they are something to gawk and ooh! at. It is spreading the word that everyone is loved and wanted, and that no one is a waste of space. This song gives out positive messages and boosts the audiences' self confidence.
Onomatopoeia
Verse 11 line 1 is an onomatopoeia. It emphasizes the sudden "explosion" of your true emotions and personality. It shows that once you show others your inner beauty, you'll no longer have to hide your feelings, thoughts and personality. You'll feel like a sudden weight was lifted off your shoulders. It encourages shy and reserved people to break free from the grasp of having no self confidence and meeting new people instead of hiding in the shadows of others.
Personal Response
I thought that Katy Perry's hit single "Firework, would be a good song to analyze as it has a very powerful meaning and can relate to students in schools, who are scared of how others think of them and comparing themselves to others. In this music video, Katy Perry was very passionate when she was singing, as if she was helping each and every listener to conquer their personal problems. The music video narrated different characters' perspective when they were depressed or stuck in a situation where they were really sad and couldn't seem to escape. As the video progresses, you see that all their problems were solved and conquered because the song motivated them to stand up for themselves and being themselves.

Song Analysis
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under?
Screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you?

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

'Cause, baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah"
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

You don't have to feel like a wasted space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
"Firework" can be portrayed as a motivational and inspirational piece for anyone who has ever felt unwanted, unloved or worthless. It brings the message that everyone is unique and beautiful. That they are capable of leaving the world in awe when they finally show who they really are as they shoot across the sky like a firework; colourful, bright and spectacular.
"Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you
?
"
This specific line in the song gives the message to never give up on yourself no matter what happens because there's always a special something in everyone. You shouldn't doubt yourself; the way you act or look because you're special and like no other person in the world.
"Come on, let your colours burst"
At the start of the song, it asks if you've ever felt like you're on the verge of breaking down, frustrated and lonely, reaching out to other for help but no one seems to hear you. This is describing the emotions people might have felt when they were being bullied, put down, lonely and all other negative emotions no one should ever feel.

This line encourages audiences to break free from their shell, show others who they truly are and tell them that they are wrong, You are amazing and let you be you. Let your personality show, be yourself and do what makes you happy.
In the first line of the song, it asks if you've ever felt like a plastic bag drifting through the wind. This is a simile, comparing feelings and emotions to what you imagine it would feel like to be an actual plastic bag, getting blown around by the wind. From my perspective, it is asking if you've ever felt like you didn't have a choice in life.To be honest, no one has a choice in life because there will be factors of which you don't get to play part of and sometimes actions that one has done without fully aware of the consequences. This is questioning the audience's state of living and their past or present feelings about life.
The "wanting the start again" part may refer to mistakes or regrets in the past that is affecting you emotionally. There are problems from which you want to escape, but you can’t because you can’t erase the past.
Other Similes
like a house of cards, on blow caving in?
As we all know, building a house of cards is quite tricky. One small bump and the cards come falling down. This line is referring to reality, when so much has happened to you that you become extremely sensitive and emotionally fragile that one small change or disappointment sends you into a breakdown.
This is something almost everyone can relate to: escaping the hardships life throws at you and start off fresh.
Just own the night light the fourth of July
The fourth of July marks the annual event of Independence Day, which means that there would be most likely fireworks. Pretending that you are one with the fireworks, let the night be yours and do what makes you happy not the other way around.
You don't have to feel like a wasted space
Junk sitting in the corner is a waste of space. But no one in the world should ever feel like a waste of space like they are worthless and have nothing to offer the world. It is saying how once you show your true personality, you won't feel like a waste of space anymore because you will finally be able to be true to yourself and your heart will be content.
Like a lighting bolt, your heart will glow
Like mentioned above, your "heart" (i.e. your true self) will glows as bright as lightning in the sky.
Baby, you're a firework
Boom, boom, boom
Symbolism
Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
The door mentioned in this line represents opportunities and choices that occur in life. The road represents your future. After hitting a few dead ends or problems, you might think that "all the doors are closed" (i.e. there are no opportunities left or you are having trouble reaching what you want) that you have nowhere left to go. But maybe the reason is because life doesn't want to lead you astray to other paths. The perfect road (i.e. where you want to get to in life) will come when the time is right. It is all about changing your point of view when going through though situations.

Symbolism
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow
We cannot know exactly what happens in the future because there are many unpredictable factors. When experiencing hardships, we feel depressed, stressed, pained and sad. This line is an example of symbolism as Katy uses the term hurricane as a symbol of hardships, troubles and problems. The rainbow is referring to hope and happiness. In this line, it is telling people who are going through tough times to never give up.No matter how terrible you think the situation is because you have to get through the hurricane before you reach the rainbow just like how you have to get through a terrible storm before a rainbow can appear. Don't give up because there are always better times. You may not feel your life will turn around but it will.
This line may also refer to what occurred in the Bible. After the great flood that killed almost every living thing on Earth, a rainbow appeared as a sign from God that signified hope and a better future, reminding us that after no matter what happens, God is always there for us.
I believe this song contained great choices of figurative language. Many authors in books and music artists use figurative language which captures the audiences' attention and imagination. It gives the song a deeper meaning and coveys messages in a creative and fun way. I am glad that they do this instead of in a straightforward fashion because it makes the lyrics more memorable, easier to understand and meaningful. "Firework" would not have been the same as most of it is made of figurative language which made the lyrics and their meanings come alive in my head.
Songs would contribute more to society if they were as meaningful as "Firework", giving out positive messages about being yourself.
This song does relate to me because it cheers up anyone in doubt of themselves. We all know that at least once in our lives, we have doubted ourselves and cared about what others think. It reminds me to never feel bad about myself or wish I was ever someone else and to stay positive in situations even though you think that there is no hope left.
