THE MATRIX DOES ANYTHING EXIST
OUTSIDE YOUR OWN MIND? Does anything exist outside your own mind? Plato's Allegory of the Cave Descartes Theory: Mind-Body Dualism Solipsism:
belief that your mind is the only thing that exists
Neo discovers none of his senses had been telling him the truth
all he knows that is real is his mind FATE, FREE WILL,
AND DETERMINISM PLATO'S ALLEGORY OF THE CAVE DESCARTES THEORY:
MIND-BODY DUALISM HEDONISIM IN HUMANS AND MACHINES Plato's Allegory:
people chained to a wall in a cave can only interpret the real world by what they see as the shadows on the wall.
One prisoner escapes into the real world to find it isn't what he has been shown his whole life.
When he runs back to tell the other prisoners about the "real world" nobody believes his stories
some people will return to the cave, and will try to reintegrate themselves into the ignorant bliss
this is called living in Bad Faith
Cypher:
wanted to return to the Matrix
didn't want to remember knowing about the real world
ignorance is bliss HEDONISIM IN HUMANS AND MACHINES EPIC CONCLUSION Mind-Body Dualism:
The Mind is distinct from the body, and the body from the mind.
The body can't exist without the mind
The Rebels on the Nebuchadnezzar 'plug' their minds into the matrix, while their bodies are still aboard the ship.
if they are hurt, or die in the Matrix, their body will also die in the real world. Humans and Machines try to live a life of pleasure
Agent Smith desires to leave the Matrix
can't accept it as his world
wants to free himself
the cause of his unhappiness The Wachowski siblings created a film
filled with philosophical references! We covered:
Hedonism in Humans and Machines
Descartes theory of Mind-Body Dualism
Plato's Allegory of the Cave
Fate, Free Will, and Determinism
Whether anything exists outside your own mind or not. Thanks for your attention! Neo didn't become the "ONE" until he decided and believed he was the "ONE"
The Oracle suggests that without her influence, the outcomes of certain events would be different
The awoken decided themselves to take the red pill vs. blue pill= Reality vs. Matrix
If the machines had had influence, no one would chose the red pill. FATE AND DETERMINISM FREE WILL Oracle: "Okay, now I'm supposed to say, Hmm, that's interesting, but... then you say..."
Neo: ..."but what?"
Oracle: "But... you already know what I'm going to tell you."
Neo: "I'm not The One."
Oracle: "Sorry, kid. You got the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something."
Neo: "What?"
Oracle: "Your next life, maybe. Who knows? That's the way these things go." “Do not try to bend the spoon, that’s impossible. Instead only try to realise the truth.”...“There is no spoon.”...“Then you’ll see that it is not the spoon that bends, only yourself.” Skepticism:
Believing you don't know anything beyond your impressions and experiences
Neo questions the world he is living in and whether or not it is real
Idealism
Everything you've ever experienced is an idea in your mind
Your mind controlled your "existence" in the Matrix
ie. Controlled your senses (smell, taste, sight, etc.) SKEPTISISM AND IDEALISM The Matrix is a computer generated program
everything is pre-encrypted
when change is made in the code, a "déjà-vu" occurs
The oracle suggests that the future can be known
gives insights about the future “I hate this place. This zoo. This prison. This reality, whatever you want to call it, I can't stand it any longer. It's the smell, if there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it.” "You know, I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize?"

[Takes a bite of steak]

"Ignorance is bliss."

-Cypher Neo: "If you're killed in the matrix, you die here?"
Morpheus:"The body cannot live without the mind.” Machines:
need energy to survive
power source was disposed of by the humans
needed to adapt and find another option
solution: use the energy humans produce
humans would do the same
Cypher:
betrays Morpheus and crew so he can be happy
living the good life, not the hard life Hedonism in Machines and Humans Does anything exisit outside your own mind? SOLIPSISM Fate, Free Will, and Determinism Fate, Free Will, and Determinism -Agent Smith KNOW THYSELF By: JAYA SCOTT & CYAN ROEPCKE
