Transcript of Iran Iraq War

(1979-1988) Beginning of the WAR Both Iran and Iraq suffered millions of casualties and billions of dollars in damage BACKGROUND Iran and Iraq had disputed control of the Shatt al-Arab, the major waterway which connect to Persian Gulf. Iraq's primary enemy was Iran specially on regional dominance. However Saddam found great chance to attack. Iran seemed vulnerable because the revolution was still going on and Khomeini was still in the process of becoming the Iranian leader. Also they were militarily weak at this point. HOWEVER
Iraq soldiers were much more stronger
within their own fortifications than
they were when human wave attacks were used with greater success inside Iran Since Iran and Iraq were two major oil producers, this war incredibly affect on oil price It was one of the most strategically important conflicts of modern times Other Major issue was religion. Even though both nations are Muslim, their perspective are different. Iraq was socialist and pro-Soviet with the ruling Ba'at Party by Sunni Branch. Iranian shah lead by Shiite was anti-socialist (though certainly not democratic) and pro-Western. Iraq leadership became an issue after the Iranian revolution, when Ayatollah Khomeini began encouraging his former colleagues to overthrow Saddam Hussein in Iraq because his regime was anti-Islamic. Saddan resonded by crackdown on Shiite fundamentalists and by sending aid to Arab separatists in Iran. BOOM! ON SEPTEMBER 17, Iraq proclaimed the Shatt "a national river". Iraq was mobilized Arab allies, and Iran warned the Gulf states they would be overthrown if they supported Saddam. Syria, Libya, China,
