04.04 Civil Rights
Miranda v. Arizona
Miranda v. Arizona was about Mexican immigrant Ernesto Miranda. He was identified in a police lineup by a woman who accused him of raping her. While he was being interrogated, the police failed to explain the Fifth and Sixth Amendments to him. These amendments state protection against self-incrimination and his right to an attorney. He was held for two hours and imprisoned for 30 plus years.
19th Amendment
The 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote. This prohibited any United States citizen to be debited the right to vote based on sex. This amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920. In 1919, Congress submitted the amendment to the states of ratification, and in 1920 it was ratified by a sufficient number of states to add the amendment to the Constitution. This amendment expanded civil rights for women and their right to vote.
Brown v. Board of Education
In the case of Brown v. Board of Education, Linda Brown's father tried to enroll her into a nearby all white school, which was closer than the African-American only school that she was attending, ad they denied her. By the school declining Brown's daughter to go to a closer school, this violated their 14th Amendment rights. This case was filed as a class action lawsuit, and applied to all in the same situation. In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court agreed, ruling that "separate but equal" was not acceptable to have in public schools. This ruling expanded civil rights because it made it so that blacks were equal.

3. Research each decision and policy and find a picture to represent each one. Take notes on the background and outcome of each case or law. You may find the Virtual Library and this Research Activity helpful. Be sure to cite the sources the information and images you use in your exhibit in MLA Format.
4. Choose a Web 2.0 tool to create a visual exhibit about your four events. There are many 21st century tools available for creating products in an online environment. Use the Web 2.0 tool of your choice to create a slideshow or video. To learn more and locate a tool to help you complete the assignment, visit the Web 2.0 tools area.

For each event, include:

an image to represent the case decision or legislation
a minimum of one well-written paragraph explaining the background of the event
the significance of the event to the expansion of civil rights
14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment was ratified on July 9, 1860 during the Reconstruction era. The four sections include:
1. State and federal citizenship for all persons regardless of race both born or naturalized in the United States.
2. No state would be allowed to abridge the "privileges and immunities" of citizens.
3. No person was allowed to be deprived of life, liberty, or the property without "due process of law."
4. No person could be denied "equal protection of the laws."
