Transcript of The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child

- The use of technology by children negatively affects interpersonal communication skills because it limits social interactions and development. This is important because it affects future jobs, relationships and health.
The evolution of Technology is affecting Child Development
The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child
according to Tribune Business Journal, the average age that a child received a cell phone in 2006 was thirteen. In 2009 that age dropped down to eight.
85% of children born in 2000/01 have access to a computer and the internet at home.12% have their own computer and same proportion had a personal mobile phone
at 2 years old, more than 90% of all American children have an online history.
At 5, more than 50% regularly interact with a computer or tablet device
7 or 8, many kids regularly play video games.
Children now rely on technology for the majority of their play, limiting challenges to their creativity and imaginations, as well as limiting necessary challenges to achieve their optimal sensory and motor development
Nicholas Carr
the emergence of reading encouraged our brains to be focused and imaginative.
In contrast, the rise of the internet is strengthening our ability to scan information rapidly and efficiently
In a 2010 study of about 300,000 creativity tests dating back to the 1970s
found creativity has decreased among American children in recent years.
Since 1990, children have become less able to produce unique and unusual ideas.
less humorous, less imaginative and less able to elaborate on ideas
movement, touch, human connection, and exposure to nature
sensory inputs ensure normal development of posture, bilateral coordination, optimal arousal states and self-regulation necessary for achieving foundation skills for eventual school entry.
vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile and attachment systems are under stimulated, the visual and auditory sensory systems are in "overload."
Sensory imbalance creates huge problems in overall neurological development, as the brain's anatomy, chemistry and pathways become permanently altered and impaired.
Four Critical Factors for Meeting Developmental Milestones
Young children exposed to violence through TV and video games are in a high state of adrenalin and stress
body does not know that what they are watching is not real.
Children who overuse technology report persistent body sensations of overall "shaking", increased breathing and heart rate, and a general state of "unease."
a. Children in the past required their own form of play that did not require costly equipment or parental supervision.
-Their sensory world was nature based and simple.
-Family time was spent doing chores and children had expectations to meet on a daily basis.

b. Today, technology’s impact on the 21st century family is fracturing its very foundation, disintegrating core values
Comparing Generations
The capacity to reflect, reason, and draw conclusion based on our experiences, knowledge, and insights.
enables us to communicate, create, build, advance, and become civilized
As advances throughout history, the technology that is available determines how our brains develop
The impact of rapidly advancing technology on the developing child has seen an increase of physical, psychological and behavior disorders
Diagnoses of ADHD, autism, coordination disorder, developmental delays, unintelligible speech, learning difficulties, sensory processing disorder, anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders are associated with technology overuse, and are increasing at an alarming rate

Critical Points
1. Comparing Generations
2. advancements in technology are changing the way children think and focus
-relationships, communication, concentration, interaction
3. The developing child
4. negative effects of technology
5. Conclusion
The 21st Century Family
Entertainment technology is constantly advancing, families scarcely notice the significant impact on the changes that are affecting their family structures and lifestyles.
parents rely heavily on communication, information, and transportation technology to make their lives faster and more efficient
A 2010 Kaiser Foundation study showed that elementary aged children use on average 7.5 hours per day of entertainment technology
75% of these children have TV's in their bedrooms, and
50% of North American homes have the TV on all day
Chronic Stress
While the long term effects of this chronic state of stress in the developing child are unknown, we do know that chronic stress in adults results in a weakened immune system and a variety of serious diseases and disorders
Four Major Negative Side Effects of Technology

Elevated Exasperation
Children indulge themselves in internet, games, or texting affecting their psyche negatively consequently leading to increased frustration
they instantly get frustrated whenever they are asked to do anything while playing games or using the internet
Ex: when their parents ask them to take the trash out, they get furious instantly. This behavior has shattered many parent-children relationships.
Deteriorated Patience
tolerance in children is vanishing quite increasingly due to the improper use of technology
Determination is a necessity that comes with patience and without it no individual can survive the hardships of life
Ex:children get frustrated quickly when they surf the internet and the page they want to view takes time to load
Declining Writing Skills
Due to the excessive usage of online chatting and shortcuts, the writing skills of today's generation have declined quite tremendously
Children have relied more on digital communication than improving writing skills
Ex:They don't know the spelling of different words, how to use grammar properly or how to write in cursive
Lack of Physical Interactivity

No one can deny the fact that the advancement of technology has produced a completely unique method of interaction and communication
now, more people are interacting with others through different platforms like apps, role- playing online games, social networks etc.
Ex: advancement has hampered the physical interaction with others when they meet them in person or what gesture they should carry
Lack of Compassion
adolescents and teens today are having difficulty identifying emotions in people
inability to feel empathy toward others who may be feeling pain, sorrow, anger and other emotions.
viewing of real or contrived violence online and/or playing video games that are violent or contain other age-inappropriate content could be numbing the sensitivities of young people
immunizing them from experiencing compassion and caring for others

What Can We Do?
encourage parents and adults to closely monitor children’s media technology habits and the time they spend with media, beginning at an early age and continuing through adolescence and the teen years
Child Lock
important to help children to create a balance between their relationship with technology and activities that nurture their social, emotional and physical skills.
While no one can argue the benefits of advanced technologies in today's world, connection to these devices may have resulted in a disconnection from what society should value most, children.
"Wake up" and see the devastating effects technology is having on our child's physical, psychological, and behavioral health but also on their ability to learn and sustain personal and family relationships
