Two Snowflakes Alike
Even though the human eye perceives the snowflake to be white, they are actually clear. Yeah, I knew that... wait what?!?!There are countless tiny surfaces from which the light seeps through making them seem white to our eyes. These snowflakes can be categorized into the six main types. Plate, column, stars, dendrite, lacy, needle, and capped. The “snowflakes” that people normally see on a cold day may not actually be snow. It might be frozen rain, or sleet, falling onto your car or bus. The frozen rain, sleet, and snowflakes are actually two very different subjects and aren’t really related to each other, besides the freezing weather and feeling of course!
Snowflakes are the most interesting things humans have discovered. At least, that is what scientists think. The snowflakes are tons of little ice crystals stuck together. However, there is a large process that allows the snowflakes to form. This average snowflake is made up of 180 billion water molecules. First, the snowflakes are little drops of water vapor that are developed in the atmosphere. These little drops may sometimes become ice, or hail, as per the weather being cold enough. The weather has to be 0 degrees or even less for snow to form in the clouds. The snowflakes form after the vapor freezes. The snowflake falls onto the ground or a roof of a child wishing for no school.
In 1998, a scientist was taking photos of snowflakes and apparently took a photo of the same snowflake twice! Or so he thought! After he did some research, it turns out, the two snowflakes were alike. This scientist had proven the myth, “snowflakes are never alike” wrong!
