‘If you wish to understand me at all, you must understand first and foremost that I am an Australian. I shall always come back to the blue mountains, in the heart of the vast, deserted continent that gave me birth.’ Significance Nellie Melba is considered Australia's first world famous opera singer. She performed in Australia, England, the United States and Europe. She was significant because she represented Australia to the world in its early years as a nation. She allowed Australia to be known on a world stage in the arts. Her Overseas Début After having some success as a professional singer in Australia she travelled to London in March 1886. At first she was taken by storm; but encouragement was just not there. Sir Arthur Sullivan told her to keep up her studies and in a year's time he may offer her a small role in The Mikado.
But by this time Nellie Melba had already organised an audition in Paris with Madame Mathilde Marchesi whom she was introduced to by Madame Pinschof, a former Australian pupil of Mme Marchesi. Marchesi immediately recognised her potential. However Nellie Melba's technique needed improving.
She made her début as an opera singer in Brussels at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, on 13 October 1887. She was soon a hit as Gilda in Rigoletto, a daughterly role at 26years old. She went against custom and performed on stage with he hair in plaits. Her Death When she was in Egypt she developed a fever that never quite went away. But luckily she was able to sing one last time at a charity performance in London at the Hyde Park Hotel. Fearing another snowy winter, she decided to return to Melbourne. Sadly her health grew worse when she was on board ship. With the hope of getting better medical care, she moved to Sydney where, on the 23rd February 1931 in St Vincent's Hospital, Darlinghurst, she died of septicaemia (bacteria in the blood stream), which originated from the facial surgery that she had received in Europe several weeks before. Yum, Peach Melba! Peach Melba Parfait The Peach Melba is a classic dessert, created in 1892 by a French chef named Auguste Escoffier at the Savoy Hotel, London to honour the Nellie Melba. It combines two of her favourite summer fruits: peaches and raspberry sauce accompanying vanilla ice cream.
Rumour has it that Nellie Melba fancied ice cream, but wouldn't eat it often, as she thought it would harm her vocal cords.
