Current Event
Title: U.S. Department of Education Awards Nearly $32 Million to Local Education Agencies and Community-Based Organizations for Nutrition and Physical Education
Summary:
The Department of Education realizes that childhood obesity is a problem in today's society. In order to decrease childhood obesity, they have created multiple different grants to assist the physical education and nutrition departments within schools. The Physical Education Program (PEP) has 60 grants, over $32 million, that they give to schools to help promote physical education. Some of these grants also cover the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse and crisis responses.

Opinion:
This is a great program that is truly helping schools promote a more active, healthy lifestyle. The PEP grants allow the schools to do multiple different things to help the physical education and nutrition departments, rather than limiting how they spend the grants.

Recent Programs
The Department of Education has many programs that it founds every year, for 2012 there were over two hundred.

Teacher Incentive Fund
Teachers and Principals get compensation on the performance of their students. This is training teachers to be able to teach their students better and more effectively. It is also rewarding teachers and principals in high-needs schools, for better academic achievement for students. At the same time it is increasing the number of teachers who can effectively teach in high-needs schools and help them effectively sustain performance.
Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants
This program provides financial assistance to dependents of deceased war veterans who passed away after September 2001. This financial contribution is not need based.
English Language Acquisition
This program sets guide lines for certain areas with high EL(English Learner) percentages.. The guidelines give ideas for helping these students and their families. These help EL students meet tough academic standards. The fund for this are distributed be a formula taking into account of immigrant and EL students.
Gulf Coast Recovery Initiative
This program is designed to give funds relief to education programs that have been affected by hurricanes and natural disasters. This program is limited to certain states, and only covers certain expenses.

Way to Improve this Program
Everyone who is affected by a natural disaster should be eligible to apply for assistance. The assistance should not be limited to FEMA's coverage.
Our Opinion
We think this is a good program to have because teachers already have a low salary. This gives the teachers an extra reason to go the extra mile to help their students.
