Space rubble
Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors
are comets found?
Where are
they found?
605,664 known, more each day!
Meteors are "shooting stars"
What do comets look like?
There are over 3,000
known comets!
"Short period"
Kuiper Belt
"Long period"
Oort Cloud
Comets orbit the sun, so
why aren't they planets?
When can I see one?
You will need to use binoculars!
"Comets are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rock and dust roughly the size of a small town"
Halley's Comet
How big are they?
What's the deal with Ceres?
biggest is Ceres at 592 miles
All the asteroids added together would still be smaller than the Moon!
What's up this week in the morning?
Asteroids orbit the sun, so
why aren't they planets?
They are space material that falls to the Earth
Meteor showers
Usually appear to originate, or radiate, from one point in the sky.
Meteor showers are named for the constellation near that radiant point.
Why do we have meteor showers?
What happens when meteors hit the Earth?
= Meteorites!
Made of:
Stone, iron, or stony-iron
Biggest = "Hoba" found in Namibia
Chicxulub Crater
= Impact craters
The Moon
Created by Catherine Gallo
How many are there?
goes around the sun
massive enough to make it round
cleared its neighborhood of smaller objects in its orbit
Nasa's "Dawn" mission is checking out what's going on in the Asteroid Belt
- largest object in the asteroid belt
- makes up about 33% of the mass in the a.b.
- large enough to be round!
Meteor Crater in Arizona
Craters around the world
Geminids Dec 13-14
goes around the sun
massive enough to make it round
cleared its neighborhood of smaller objects in its orbit
Comet year = period
Catalina Comet
The European Space Agency (ESA) last year landed on comet!
Rosetta flew there and Philae was the name of the lander.
Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
