"Faith" is a fine invention
Poem Analysis
"Hope" is the thing with feathers
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the
soul
-
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at
all

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could
abash
the little Bird
That kept so many

warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

Depiction of Death

Invention:
-something, typically a process or device, that has been invented.
-creative ability.

Derived from the Latin word
Inventio which means to discover
Poems about nature contradict her poems about faith and death.
These poems typically have more rhyme and rhythm to them.
generally peaceful and gentle poems
more about life than death.
"Beauty is not caused. it is"
- Emily Dickinson
Infatuated with death.
Romanticizes death.
Death haunts her.
She often simplifies death.
Detaches herself from the world.

contradicts herself when talking about religion.
Puritanism and Transcendentalism were the most influential religions for her poetry.
knew the bible very well.
some of the rhythms of her poems were rhythms of church music they would listen to.
Conflicted about her religion

Grew up in Amherst, Mass
Prominent family - father was lawyer, town official, State Senator, and US House Representative, Grandfather founded Amherst College.
Mother was not emotionally accessible - cold and aloof
Young Emily was a well-behaved girl who played the piano.
She was raised to be a cultured Christian woman who would one day be responsible for a family of her own (joke?)
Relationships
Dickinson never married
