Transcript of "The Giver" vs. "The Truman Show"

Similar Characters Traits
Similar Plot Points
In "The Giver" and "The Truman Show", the main characters, Jonas and Truman, want to leave their community. While leaving they are in situations were they are between life and death. The authors end the book/movie in a open-ended way. Both stories have a similar beginning where the community sees something strange in the sky. Also at the beginning, the "speakers" tell the people in the not to worry because of the object.
We are going to tell you some of the similarities between "The Giver" and "The Truman Show".
The Truman Show Summary
*Jonas- a daring and adventurous boy
*The Giver- a strong man who contains everyone's pain
By: Jahnavi Nadella and Jennifer Dale Veronica Carter
*Truman-unaware immature adult who doesn't know what is real any more.
*Director- creator of Truman's world.
In "The Giver" and "The Truman Show" there is no room for mistakes. Everyone is being "controlled" in their community. The two main characters, Jonas and Truman, start to realize things are different than they always use to know it and they start to see/question things in their community. Both characters are adventurous meaning they want to explore things beyond what they already know.
The character similarities for both "The Giver" and "The Truman Show" is that almost everyone rides bikes for transportation. They both live in controlled environments . Both of the main characters, Jonas and Truman, realize that things are looking strange. Finally, both characters like/ love to explore their surroundings.
'In "The Giver" and "The Truman Show" the main characters, Jonas and Truman, have a person vs. nature conflict while leaving their communities. Jonas has trouble with the heavy snow and Truman has trouble with the dramatic waves. Another similar conflict is that they were both living "fake " lives. Also they both lived a controlling life/community . The last similar conflict they both had no true person to love and they also didn't have a true mom or dad.
In "The Giver" and "The Truman Show", the themes are never stop believing. In "The Giver", Jonas still believed that he and Gabriel would get to Elsewhere and in "The Truman Show", Truman believed that he would get to Figi no matter what happened to him. Another similar theme between "The Giver" and "The Truman Show" is that both of the author's want to know is try and try again until you succeed. In "The Giver", while escaping he didn't quit because his legs were getting tired, he kept trying until he reached Elsewhere. In "The Truman Show", Truman didn't quit when he was escaping even though there was a lot winds and big waves that could have killed him.
So, "The Giver" and "The Truman Show" have a lot in common. They also have things that make them different from each other. Not all the plot events are the same. For example, Jonas goes through a "Ceremony of Twelve" which is important in "The Giver". But, there is nothing like it or similar to it in "The Truman Show". The differences make them both unique in their own ways.
This is a quote that the Giver said to Jonas when Jonas asked what would happened if he got lost in the River like another kid did a long ago.
This is when Truman is trying to escape and get to Figi, but his boat hits a wall and Truman realizes he lived his whole life in a created world.
This is Truman "created" community before he left to Figi.
Truman's everyday saying.
Truman's true love not is fake love.
Truman right before he leaves his made up world.
Truman was married to her in the movie and she was his fake wife.
