What is mobile
learning?
‘the provision of education and training on PDAs/palmtops/handhelds, smartphones and mobile phones.’ Desmond Keegan (2005)
"nomadic learning" Bouvin (2005),
is it an entirely new educational format, or a form of e-learning? Traxler (2005)
Yiannis Laouris ran a Google
search of the term mobile learning:
January 2005: 1240 items
June 2005: 22,700 items
Sharples (2005) is among the
most prolific and respected
scholars in the mobile learning
field.
Sharples points out that mobile
learning substantially increases
the possibilities for communication
and conversation.
widespread adoption (90%)
changing strategies for students
pedagogical fit: constructivism
Larger enrollments and
standardized testing have
eroded a sense of
community: mobile learning
can bring that back by
increasing interactivity and
student engagement
(Harper, 2009)

a part of the everyday

Why?
The key features of using a
mobile device for learning
are its personalization capability
and extended reach; this has
potentially attracted more
and more learners, (Motiwalla, 2007)
Is it practical?
Privacy concerns:
Location-based
experiences
battery life
issues
is it ethical for software
on mobile devices to
monitor and control
children's learning
activities outside the
classroom...
Closing thoughts...
100 years ago, people travelled
to music halls to be entertained.
Then came the gramophone
and broadcasting.
Now, the Internet enables
people to create and share
entertainment media across
the world
100 years ago, children
travelled to schools to
sit in rows and be
instructed by a teacher.
