The Musical
Originally stemmed from operettas- a European light opera that use spoken dialogue between the musical numbers
Operettas that adapted humorous plots were called “musical comedy” and later “musicals”
The two early musical hits were
“Showboat” by Jerome Kern
“Porgy and Bess” by George Gershwin
Musicals after 1940 were dominated by the Roger & Hammerstein duo, with classics like:
The King and I
American composer Leonard Bernstein composed “West Side Story” in 1957
A re-telling of the classic “Romeo and Juliet” story
Uses the cha-cha-cha in the dance scene

a new style of popular music that was more dependent on rhythm than melody, like popular song
